These days people give their pets people names and give their kids names that used to be used for pets.

Hyacinth’s last name was Bucket (”it’s pronounced bouquet!”), but that was her married name.
But, all the rest of the sisters did have flower names.

I am good friends with a gentlemen who was originally named Richard Wackett. He changed his last name back to his mother’s maiden name years ago.

First of all, I think that the de-emphasis on Biblical names indicates a de-emphasis on religion. BUt, the former deacon of my church (when I questioned the name Madison for a little girl) by asking if there were a St. Madison. With a twinkle in his eye he said, “Well I’ve never heard of St. Madison, but perhaps she just hasn’t been named yet.”

In some tribes thoughout the world a child’s name is created by combining names of their ancestors....First part of one name with part of another...Many families although they have been “civilized” continue the practice. Just as we might name a child after great aunt Elizabeth or Nathan.
Remember that Johnson was once John’s son...and Leonardo da VInci. Simply meant Leonard from the town on Vinci....
A Baker was a baker. A Miller was a miller.
If you look at the Palin family they have continued Todd’s family tradition by naming their children after things that were important to them at the time of birth.

MY only son is name Reagan. I’ve been told it’s a girls’ name, but he seems to make it work for him.

I've heard of instances of kids being named after models when Toyota was first introduced to America, i.e. "Carrolla", "Tercel", and "Corona".
Then there was the lady who was reading Cosmo and saw a pretty word she'd never seen before, and named her daughter "Fellatio".
Whatever happened to good ol' American names, like "Rastas", "Leroy", and "Roosevelt"? /sarc
