Ben Nelson:Dems may have to abandon comprehensive health bill,go step-by-step(Cornhusker Kickback)

Democrats may have to abandon their effort for comprehensive healthcare legislation in favor of a piecemeal approach, Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) said Friday.

Nelson, a centrist Democrat whose vote is critical to the fate of healthcare reform in the Senate, said that while he's inclined to support a majority-vote maneuver to pass a bill, he's unsure Senate Democrats will be able to do so.

"I don't know if we can get a comprehensive bill through," Nelson said during an interview on KLIN radio in Nebraska. "Honestly, I just don't know."

"We may be forced to doing healthcare -- to use my analogy -- by making a pie a piece at a time, which is typically not the preferred way to handle legislation," the senator added. "But this is so big, and has so many moving parts and has so many supporters and detractors, that maybe that's the only thing you can do. Grab a piece of it here, grab a piece of it there and try to put together as much of it as you can."

Translation: This one's gonna cost Reid big-time and it's gonna be guaranteed non-removable in reconciliation!

Nelson's full of crap. With reconciliation on the table, it will allow him and Landriu and Lincoln to vote against it. This, of course, will have the effect of easing the concerns of their idiotic moderate voters in their respective states. Nelson will be able to look like a "conservative Democrat", just like the script says.

If they go reconciliation, they can give Nelson a free pass to vote against the bill, even criticize it publicly. Reid and Obama will probably actually ENCOURAGE him to do so to help preserve his political standing in Nebraska. Then 50 democrats from safer seats can take the plunge and Obama can get his monument, and the average Joe Blow thinks Nelson “stood on principle”.

"Nelson, a centrist Democrat whose vote is critical to the fate of healthcare reform in the Senate, said that while he's inclined to support a majority-vote maneuver to pass a bill..."

"Centrist" defined as a Democrat "inclined" to take extreme undemocratic steps to ram through unconstitutional legislation that people hate.

I wonder what they consider to be a "liberal" Democrat? Would you have to go all the way to Ho Chi Minh City for an example?

And what was revealed yesterday is that the other Nelson from Florida managed his own sleazy deal. The seniors in his area will get to keep their Medicare Advantage.

Everyone else will lose theirs.

I think Nelson will have to go for his Plan B... build a time machine to go back a few months and switch his original vote from “yes” to “no” on HC.

Ben Nelson's dog in this fight is the anti-trust exemption. He is bought and paid by the insurance companies, he held firm the last vote until it was changed.

Expect the same now.

He has already voted for it. The senate bill is final if they take the reconciliation route.

"The senate bill is final if they take the reconciliation route. "

The Reconciliation bill is what would be final. The vote on that bill will only require 50 votes.
