A man apparently infatuated with a special education teacher he knew from college shot and killed her as she walked into her elementary school Friday, shortly before students began arriving.
The suspect was killed in a shootout with a deputy a short time later about 10 miles away, said Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer.
The man had been released on bail Monday after being arrested a week ago for violating a protective order the teacher, Jennifer Paulson, obtained in September 2008, said Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum.
The victim's father, Ken Paulson, said she was kind and loving, and that's probably why she was a special education teacher. He described the 30-year-old as a devout Christian.

Aw, man... what a nasty development. I listened to the coverage early this morning, but am just learning about this wider fact set.
Crap. She was such a lovely person. That picture just blares out niceness. Goodness.
And the creep was jailed a week ago? Something’s broken here.
I LOVE that picture.
Is that sign real or photoshopped?
Amazing, isn’t it, that some people just looking at them you know they are good folk.
I’m often able to spot Christians on TV before they even say anything. And you can usually tell the liberal also.
It’s funny, when I used to go watch the legislature, you could always tell the Democrats from the Republicans without even knowing. Not because of race, but there was just the way they dressed and wore their hair. But the funniest thing was, often the Dems have a mess all over their desks, and the republicans were neat. Don’t ask me what that meant.
Perhaps we might re-evaluate how we handle “problem” students. Reform (boarding) school with armed guards, razor wire and 24 hour surveillance would be a good start. First sign of misbehavior - that’s where you go. End of story. Don’t tow the line? Next step, the Big House.
Simple answer, citizen. Go get some weapons training and purchase your own defense. Then, don’t hesitate to use it. Otherwise, prepare to live as my friend in Nigeria does - under curfew from 6 PM to 6 AM where anyone found in violation can be shot on sight. This is how they keep order and protect their people from each other. I, for one, don’t want to live that way. But, if we keep dilly dallying around with this asinine gun restrictions that’s where this society will end up. We the People need to EXERCISE our rights before they are taken away by an over-reaching (benevolent?) government.
