The 1964 Anchorage earthquake.

It might be on that order. Though... that was a 9+

I think it came in initially as 9.1 and was downgraded to 8.9, but the region has long, long shallow shores and the Chilean coastline fortunately does not.

More than two minutes of shaking. That’s frightening.

Yeah. At some point the earth simply can't move enough, so the energy gets smeared out over time.

On my USGS Live Bookmark feed, there were two earthquakes listed as in Central CA at 4.1 and 3.3 shortly after the big one in Chile.

It seems probable that an 8.5 would certainly trigger activity even that far away.

These people near this epicenter are in trouble. Also, the tsunamis getting started at 2:00AM is just disastrous.

How much damage does an 8.3M do 200 miles away?

Depends on depth, geology etc...

I'm hearing it not far from Concepción, Chile with a population of about 250,000.

Bergland predicted something big in this time frame, I think.

doing a little fact checking about Concepción, Chile and Wikipedia already list the earthquake in its natural features section. Man they are fast.

I just looked up pictures of Concepcion, Chile on TripAdvisor. OMG, it’s a nice city, with beautiful natural environs.
