Was that the result of the big 9.5 earthquake that Chile had that year?
It was an earthquake in Peru. And when it hit it destroyed 7 blocks of Hilo. I believe the most damage was done on the 3rd wave. This was back when they called them
Tidal waves.
I watched a local broadcast on the web. First I have to say every one took this pretty seriously and did a great job of getting out of the way. But watching the tv people hype this up and then see the waves go back and forth a little bit made me wonder why Geraldo wasn’t there. My husband has an issue with calling them Tsunamis. He says we should speak English. It doesn’t bother me all that much.

That’s not what it is. It’s an earthquake wave.
OK. Then earthquake wave. Actually, I don’t have a problem with the word Tsunami. It’s my husband who constantly has to talk over the TV announcer and correct them with an English version of whatever it’s called.
The 2006 earthquake in Indonesia that generated such enormous tsunamis that killed thousands measure 7.7 on the Richter Scale. The Chile earthquake measured 8.8 but produced very small tsunamis. Why?
