A tsunami generated by an 8.8-magnitude earthquake in Chile struck Hawaii Saturday, but an official with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the island chain "dodged a bullet" after smaller-than-expected waves were reported.

Global Warming was cooler than expected.
CNN brought out their ususal share of idiots. After the Indonesian tsunami, you would think CNN reporters would know that a tsunami is not a huge breaking wave roaring in from across the ocean.

The announcers on the Weather Channel explained even a one foot Tsunami can cause considerable damage because its forward speed can be 500 mph.
No, it was all media hype.
And first time unemployment claims unexpectedly rose last week.

I thought all three main News Networks did a poor job. The camera shots were mostly web cast not news cameras, which is why CNN and Fox was showing the same footage. MSNBC was showing a split screen with the left half a poor quality web cast, and the right side showing a tape of surfers that kept looping over and over. Hawaii is part of the United States - and we cant get quality news cameras on scene?
They are confusing where the height measurement are being made. When the wave is going that fast in deep water it will do no damage at all. When they hit shallower waters they slow by orders of magnitude and do massive damage. A one foot tsunami at 500 mph would turn into 100's of feet of water when hitting land. And a one foot tsunami measured on land is basically trivial.
Fox has been pretty much live all day with a camera view of the beach off of Oahu, hoping to catch the first shot of the incoming tsunami, and they sound disappointed that nothing worth mentioning came ashore.
The tsuanmi came from South America heading north, which meant the wave had to go against gravity which slowed it down. If it was headed south it would have gone faster toward the melting South Pole ice cap and destroyed it.
That's what I was thinking. In an age of faster & more extensive communication, I felt like the coverage was a major step backward.

I was there in 1960 when a big one hit Hilo. A 35 foot wall of water traveling over 400 MPH hit Hilo. The destruction was unbelievable.
Water was running through the lobby of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel at Waikiki
I would rather have fewer earthquakes and fewer chances to test tsunami predictions.
I'm not doubting what you may have read but a wall of water traveling at that speed is a physical impossibility.
Underwater shock waves may be able to go that fast but not water waves themselves.........
Was that the result of the big 9.5 earthquake that Chile had that year?
