CNN: Liberals and Atheists Have Higher IQs
NewsBusters ^ | 02/28/2010 | Noel Sheppard

Posted on 02/28/2010 7:30:42 AM PST by kingattax

"Political, religious and sexual behaviors may be reflections of intelligence, a new study finds."

So began an article published at CNN.com Friday guaranteed to anger conservatives from coast to coast.

The piece continued, "Evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa at the the London School of Economics and Political Science correlated data on these behaviors with IQ from a large national U.S. sample and found that, on average, people who identified as liberal and atheist had higher IQs."

Folks are warned about proceeding further, for the content might be really offensive to some (h/tips to NB readers Stan and Chesley):

This parallels a recent study report that said students at religious/fundamentalist colleges have lower SAT scores.

Not that I necessarily believe ANYTHING that CNN would air, but I’ve worked with several people who have boasted of their high IQ’s and didn’t have enough common sense to make a pot of tea.

higher IQs and atheists?

Makes sense to me. They tend to think way more of themselves
than they should - and pride is always the downfall of those
who end up far from God.

My reaction is "even if true, so what?"

Are these "smart liberals" asserting that, on account of their superior wisdom, they have the moral right to order stupid people how to run their own lives?

The study found that young adults who said they were "very conservative" had an average adolescent IQ of 95, whereas those who said they were "very liberal" averaged 106.

So they consider 106 to be a high IQ? I blow that off the chart and do not consider myself to be all that exceptional.

With you there. Mine is a significant three digit number and liberal schools bored the hell out of me. I was smarter than about every teacher and professor I have ever run cross. Now they may have more knowledge in some small specific field f endeavor but on a problem solving scale I kicked their a$$es. And we stand together on the right side.

Conservatives built the greatest nation in history, while liberals are now destroying it.

If the above statement is true, then it is preferential to have common sense over a high intelligence quotient.

Higher IQ doesn’t mean wisdom, experience and knowing the difference between right and wrong. I suppose it’s more like a high speed computer with tremendous capacity and unless it’s controlled by a system of checks and balances (moral foundation, conscience formation, etc.) it can cause a great deal of harm in the wrong hands. Maybe not the best analogy but applicable.

“Religion, the current theory goes, did not help people survive or reproduce necessarily, but goes along the lines of helping people to be paranoid, Kanazawa said. Assuming that, for example, a noise in the distance is a signal of a threat helped early humans to prepare in case of danger.”

Religious or Atheist question aside, Liberals do not prepare for danger, they whine and cry and insist that danger does not exist, except for evil conservatives. The only “evolutionary” advantage they have ever had is that we have not choked them to death yet, because for the most part, our religion prohibits it.

Who cares? Most Liberals and Atheists have zero common sense, and I can assure you, common sense is a lot more valuable then a high IQ. End of story. Just take a good objective, hard look at Joe Biden, etc. The poor gent may have a great IQ, but he is far, far from being the sharpest knife in the drawer!!! In fact, gently speaking he is a first class buffoon. So much for high IQs.

If they have higher IQs then why do they consistently come up with the wrong answers to society’s and life’s problems?

Selfish ego goes along with the IQ. That may be a significant part of the answer.

Hitler had a high IQ, as did many Nazi’s who made one of the most impressive war machines in history. (for it’s time)

In this IQ “finding”, I detect hubris, as well as arrogance and self righteousness. A dangerous combination.
Achilles comes to mind.

Why do they think that the problem is that the right people haven't tried to implement failed policies of the past?

Why do they filter out the history of countries where what they currently advocate has failed miserably?

A little intelligence is a dangerous thing. Were the smart atheists and liberals to become even smarter, they would come around to value the clarity and truth inherent in well-considered faith. They would see enough to know their limitations, and accept that there is Power higher than themselves.

Personally, one way the devil really gets to me is to remind me that so many really intelligent people would ridicule that “crutch” I use called religion. I can’t stand that smart people would not think me very smart, and the whole ‘faith’ thing could really be just superstitious wishful thinking. Perhaps some atheists are like me. They don’t want to be thought stupid, and they gain some self-esteem by thinking that they are superior to all those narrow religious people.

What they don’t gain from that is any hope. That’s what typically brings me back from from the brink, back from joining the ranks of jaded, faithless intellectuals. Why would anyone voluntarily accept being just a purposeless bag of chemicals? And, truthfully, nobody lives as though that is all they are.

Faith gives hope. What do atheists have to offer that is as good as hope? Well, they think humans who try hard enough can solve the ills of the world, hence the liberalism. Humans can do a lot to improve some things, but ultimately only when they are relying upon higher principles and Power and acting with humility and charity. Otherwise, condescension and coercion are likely to poison the effort.

There is no statistical difference between an IQ of 95 and that of 106. Both would be in the range of “normal”.

And on average liberals and atheists are generally more unhappy than conservatives and religious folks, even though their own personal levels of self-satisfaction and smugness over others is generally very high. They also really like to seem to cheat and do ‘end justifies the means’ schemes more than other categories of people. They are incredible at rationalization.

Big whup if they score better on an IQ test. I’ve known several libs who were ‘geniuses’ in their given field but couldn’t function in other areas of life just interacting with people.

I would say that many liberals do have higher aptitudes for certain things....mostly in the area of arts and culture. What many of them don’t have is a lick of common sense. Take for example George Bernard Shaw who saw Soviet Russia as the future. He was not the only liberal intellectual who was seduced by the socialist dream. Undoubtedly he would have hated most of the people in his dream society as evidenced by his lunatic proposal to kill most people who he considered unfit to live. Following the advice of brilliant idiots like Shaw would have led the world down the road to slavery.

Oh please - this is absurd on so many levels. For one thing, an “IQ test” can be skewed in any which way; the categories here are inaccurately and way too broadly drawn; and the reasoning is horribly flawed. Does this really pass for scholarship?

check out this quote from him in Wiki

"Imagine that, on September 11, 2001, when the Twin Towers came down, the President of the United States was not George W. Bush, but Ann Coulter. What would have happened then? On September 12, President Coulter would have ordered the US military forces to drop 35 nuclear bombs throughout the Middle East, killing all of our actual and potential enemy combatants, and their wives and children. On September 13, the war would have been over and won, without a single American life lost. Yes, we need a woman in the White House, but not the one who’s running (Hillary Clinton, ed.)".[10]
