Tsunamis Pound Chile's Coastal Towns After Quake

The worst damage appears to be in the coastal town of Constitucion, some 70 kilometers north of Pelluhue. Houses a half-kilometer from the beach were filled with water, mud and sand. Water marks were visible on walls 10 blocks from the shoreline. According to a local firefighter, 80 people have been confirmed dead.

The town has also seen widespread looting as panicked residents search for food, water and basic necessities. The Unimarc supermarket was completely ransacked, and a fire that the firefighter said was intentionally set was burning in the basement.

Karen Espinoza, owner of a bakery that was completely looted, was despondent. "My dreams here have died, Constitucion has died," she said. "What the earthquake didn't take away, the sea took away. And what the sea didn't take, the looters did."
