About as useful. But a .50 cal won’t tear it to shreds as a 14.7 would do to a Sheridan.

If it’s cold (not very unlikely!) you’d probably need to light up the glow plugs.

There must be something like a glow plug with the mechanical fuel injection. Also I imagine there is a fuel heating system.

True, although there are other less elegant methods of getting one to start when it's cold.

Think about how much steel is in 10,000 battle tanks...

Something is fishy...missing keys to ignition? Not on an american tank. Sit behind the wheel and drive off? I don’t know which tank might have a steering wheel....and why would these be abandoned? Run out of fuel - all at the same time?

Well, that depends on your perspective. The Russian perspective has been shaped by their experiences in WW II. If the enemy is approaching a defended point and all you have are poorly trained troops, you put them in older tanks infantry vehicles and let them wear away the enemy forces that they can wear away. A T-55 would be pretty useless against the M1 series tanks but it will kill a Bradley IFV quite well, thank you. Remember, if you can get even a 1:2 kill ratio on defense, it may not stop the enemy, but his losses may give him pause to consider whether or not to continue the attack. Any resulting respite may be what you need to get regular troops to the area to pick up the pieces.

Hmm, I’m surprised no one tried to sell one of the tanks on the black market.

Shortly before the fall of the Soviet Union, a crew traded their tank to a farming commune for food. They had received neither pay nor food for a long time and they were at the point of starvation.

The Army was embarrassed when the international press released photos of the commune plowing their fields with the tank.

People can dump on the Russian - you know who is a far bigger threat to us. My nagging fear is we are going to end up like the post-USSR.

Broke and it will be worse because we have a lot more malcontents who will go crazxy when the endless freebies get cutoff.

I feel sorry for seniors and baby boomers but people voted for this. Idiots watching TV in dreamland while the left controls the sheep via TV.

And playing with empty ammunition belts? The ammo is the belt, no ammo, just a pile of links. Just a lot of fishy stuff in this story.

Googled it and found the story in the Russian press. The tanks are at a rail head. Apparently they offloaded them and the beaurocrats in charge forgot about them. The UK story is misleading.

Sounds like a good plan for wwii, but with the population problems westernized nations are currently experiencing, I don’t see how any troops can be considered “disposable”. The only thing disposable in american military from here on out is mundane ordnance, and fuel. I expect the same will be true for russia.

Over 9,000 M1’s have been built, which tank fleet would you rather have?

The only items that seemed to be missing were live rounds

I was about to get excited till I read that. I mean, how cool would that be to find tanks with live rounds?

"Think about how much steel is in 10,000 battle tanks..."

For years after WWII Tunesia's largest export was scrap metal.
