States May Ban Credit Checks on Job Applicants

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - It's hard enough to find a job in this economy, and now some people are facing another hurdle: Potential employers are holding their credit histories against them.

Sixty percent of employers recently surveyed by the Society for Human Resources Management said they run credit checks on at least some job applicants, compared with 42 percent in a somewhat similar survey in 2006.

Employers say such checks give them valuable information about an applicant's honesty and sense of responsibility. But lawmakers in at least 16 states from South Carolina to Oregon have proposed outlawing most credit checks, saying the practice traps people in debt because their past financial problems prevent them from finding work.

So people in debt shouldn’t work to pay it off?

It does trap people. Lost a job? SCREW YOU. You’ll never get another!

That’s basically how credit checks, especially in this obama economy, work.

Don’t get yourself in debt!!!

I was taught that if you don’t have the money to pay for it you don’t need it and have lived m7 72 years by those rules.

I have never paid interest for anything other than my first home in my life including my airplane which I saved for years before I had the $86k to pay for it.

Its almost akin to the scarlet letter. One our goernment so enjoys passing laws to expand.

Convicted Felon, Convicted Sex Offender, Domestic Violence Offender, Probationer, Parolee, etc...

Its all by designed to do nothing more than collect your info, place you on a list for the purpose of more and more control over your lives.

Divorce can kill credit also for many reasons.
There are many people who are good that get trapped by credit.

If this is changed, employers can run non credit checks as far as they like, currently they like credit checks because they are protected from being sued.

In other words, this is another Dem payback to trial lawyers.

You're a funny guy dale. You're still posting like it's 2004, and everything is just peachy....Suggesting that all these millions of people that have gone belly up, lost their jobs, homes, investments, pensions etc., are all somehow irresponsible.

It's simply not the case dale.

Do you own your own business or did you rely on somebody else to give you a job?

I’ve never worked for anyone in my life.

In over 50 years of business I never borrowed one cent and did between 1 and 2 million a year.

The vast majority of credit reports contains errors. Fixing a credit report with errors on it is worse than pulling teeth. For this fact alone credit reports should not be used for things that are essential to living, such as getting a job.

Your post just made me remember one good quote from Jeff Bezos of Amazon...

‘I would rather hire someone who failed in the tech industry because they have seen what are the consequences of their mistakes and are most likely never to repeat it because they have learned from it.’

Just because you were late in one payment doesn;t mean you are a loser that should not be hired.

The guy I hired to inspect my 2nd house before purchase had some sage advice. Credit checks and criminal background checks are common checks made by a landlord. His backup check was to have a look at how the applicants care for their cars. If they keep a crappy, dirty car full of junk, you can expect similar treatment of your rental.

A credit check doesn’t necessarily reflect whether or not someone is “responsible”. If someone made good payments on $95,000 worth of credit card debt, while having a $35,000 income, I’d hardly consider them “responsible”....Stupid is more like it.

Employers shouldn’t be checking a prospective employee’s credit no more than they should be using drug screens, IMO. Employers shouldn’t be snooping around in someone’s personal life.

If employers want such information from employees, then prospective employees should be able to request a drug screening and a personal financial audit of the company executives. As a prospective employee, I wouldn’t want to unknowingly go to work for a company that has executives that mismanage money and does drugs.

In over 50 years of business I never borrowed one cent and did between 1 and 2 million a year.

Did you pay cash for the property you operated your business on. Did you buy all the equipment you used in your business by paying cash? Did you pay cash for any cars you used in your business?

If you paid cash for every transaction you were involved in, exactly what kind of business were you running?

Being in debt is not the same as being a deadbeat...

I’d hire you if you had debt, but not if your credit check confirms that you are a deadbeat...
