Poll shows Specter in strong position (Snarlin Arlen rockets ahead of Toomey - Quinnipiac)

U.S Sen. Arlen Specter leads his Democratic primary challenger by 24 percentage points and also has climbed ahead of likely Republican nominee Pat Toomey in a general-election matchup, according to a Quinnipiac University Poll released today. Specter, seeking a sixth term as a Democrat after 28 years as a Republican senator, leads U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak in his new party's primary 53 percent to 29 percent, the survey finds.

The poll also shows Specter ahead of Toomey 49 to 42 percent, after being essentially tied with the Republican since last summer. In December, for instance, the Quinnipiac Poll found a literal tie between the two men, at 44 percent each.

It is a "good winter politically" for Specter, said Peter W. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "There remains no evidence that his primary challenger . . . has made much progress."

The primary is May 18.

The poll also found President Obama's approval rating at 49 percent among Pennsylvania voters, as well as profound distrust of government. Fewer than one in five think the federal government or the state government does the right thing all or most of the time.

Quinnipiac are often poll pushers.

Quinnipiac == BS

Just trying to demoralize the conservative base. Of course, if you are on the PA message board, the internal sniping is worse.

PA Democrat message board or PA Republican message board? Your comment is cryptic—could you explain? Sniping by Repubs against Repubs (bad news), sniping among Democrats against Specter (good news)?

Specter has been doing a lot of things right. He advocated a bill to make witness intimidation a federal crime and now he's supporting a flat tax.

He's not going to be easy to beat but it still can be done.

I don’t believe this poll for a minute. Nothing’s going on in PA. Except the same stuff that’s going on everywhere else. Job losses, high taxes, etc.

Toomey hasn’t even started campaigning to my knowledge. This is way too early and wishful thinking on their part.

There are a reputable firm, however, it’s worth noting that the Quinnipiac poll used a sample of “regular voters”. In every other recent poll, Toomey is ahead, and those polls use a sample of “likely voters”, which is a much more realistic model - especially for a midterm election where only the more motivated voters turnout.

I know little about Benedict Specter's Dem opponent; however I doubt that the Dems trust Specter very much.

And they they have to know that Specter is held in remarkably low regard by so many that he represents a true liability.

It's their primary so I hope they DO pick Specter.

GOP and Independent voters will be unusually highly motivated in the general election.

Mister Specter should be preparing for his (friendless) retirement.

“Strong position” is a bit of spin considering Specter has been trailing in every other poll for months. Now all of a sudden one dubious poll shows him gaining ground in just the last week or two. That is hardly strong, even if he is doing better. And 7 points is hardly insurmountable. No one thought it would be easy to dump a long time senator in a Demo leaning state.

Sorry, my bad. The Freeper PA message board. Bunch of crap about who the most “conservative” vs the most “winnable” candidate for the Republicans, with a bunch of petty name-calling.

Quinnipiac push polls when there’s no election coming up. They are like Zogby in that way. Its a very, very liberal organization, but theyre not stupid. During Clinton’s time and early Bush they were more obvious; since then they have learned subtlety.

Wow, this country really is hopeless.

We are just like Europe now. Looks like we’ve reached the tipping point and have just too many people on the dole, immigrants that have no understanding of how this nation was built, and minority groups that will support Democrats no matter what.

Quite a shame.

Same-old, same-old. They may not like Specter, but they know he's connected to the pork pipeline. They want their goodies.

As long as he promises largesse from the pork factory, PA voters... once again... will curl up at his feet.
