EDITORIAL: Learning from the D.C. handgun ban--Getting rid of gun bans leads to less crime
The Washington Times ^ | March 2, 2010 | Editorial

The year after the Supreme Court struck down the District of Columbia's handgun ban and gun-lock requirements, the capital city's murder rate plummeted 25 percent. The high court should keep that in mind today as it hears oral arguments about a Chicago handgun ban.

Gun controllers screamed to high heaven that impending disaster would follow the court's decision to junk some of the district's gun controls. One of those screaming the loudest was Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, who incorrectly predicted more gun freedom would lead to more death and Wild West shootouts. Instead, in Washington, murder rates rose when the handgun ban was in effect and fell once the regulations were removed.

Chicago's 1982 ban faired no better...

Can’t really say it leads to less crime, but it certainly didn’t lead to more.

Yep, and it does lead to a few less criminals.

It amazes me that this simple fact is impossible for the antigunners to grasp. They’re as bad as Algore is on “global warming”. River in Egypt, etc.

The SC should only be considering the constitutionality of the issue not the crime rate statistics.

Exactly...This has been proven time and time again and the gun grabbers just go on as if nothing happened.

There was a thread a few days ago about a college in CO that banned guns on campus. The County sheriff was against the ban and related how he sat down with a teacher and presented her with fact after fact after fact.

When he was all finished she told him she didn’t care about the facts, she didn’t want guns on campus. Go figure.

Liberals are immune to facts when they conflict with their worldview.

This is similar to showing them that time after time,
it is best to let the people keep their own money,

but that is in opposition to their worldview of everyone
being dependent on those that “know better”.

Wasn’t there a little Southern town or county that was beset by crime -— until the gun laws changed? Presto — the crime rate dropped and went to nearby towns/counties.

Work’s every time!

Kennesaw GA. Crime is not nonexistent, but is very low for the area.
It’s just down the street from Smyrna GA, home of Glock.

I believe that’s happened in many places, I’ve read about it several times.

Crime, like poverty, makes the populace more dependent on government. That’s why the liberals like it so much.

Good point...With libs it’s not just with guns, it’s anything and everything they believe it’s best for them to control because they “know better.”

Yep, and it does lead to a few less criminals.

Two of them shot deader than a doornail while breaking into houses, less than a mile from my house, in the last month.

Gang members with drug habits, foraging for a smoke.

That's like saying, "subject to my discretion and how I feel about it at the moment, and whether I like you, you have the right to trial by a jury of your peers."

"The police power" is a euphemism for City Hall and the local political machine.

Kennesaw GA. Crime is not nonexistent, but is very low for the area.

Kennesaw passed an ordnance about 25 years ago requiring people to have a firearm. The town didn't jack anyone up for not having one, but it underlined the point that the rules were different around there. (I've been to Kennesaw, and up the mountain with its Civil War park. It's beautiful up there.)

NBC News practically went nuts -- shrilly pointing and ooh'ing and aaah'ing at footage of some dude with an Allman Brothers haircut piling into his '79 Trans Am Superchicken with a pair of 1911's strapped on his hips. "EEEEKKK!! Omigod Omigod Omigod, he has a gunnnn!!!!"

Think that old boy still has the car -- nobody was gonna take it away from him, lol.

Correct, but statistics are helpful when trying to stop gun grabbers. An armed society is a polite society.

Ah— Yes! Kennesaw, GA. You’d think that lawmakers across the country would learn from that little event!

I don’t have a gun, but am an NRA member. I have NRA stickers on several windows and by all doors. I’m trying to make a point! Those outside, don’t know there’re no guns inside! (I hope!)

My husband and I keep meaning to join a gun club, but keep putting it off. At our age, it would seem strange, maybe, but I would still like to give it a try. Several years ago, I was at a ‘guest day’ at a gun club, and my gun-toting sons were amazed at my target sheets. Don’t mess with Momma!
