From June, 2006...

Senator Santorum Makes Major Announcement Regarding Newly Declassified Information Concerning Chemical Weapons Discovered in Iraq

“This is critically important information that the world community needs to know” – Senator Santorum

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, joined Congressman Peter Hoekstra, (R-MI-2), Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, today to make a major announcement regarding the release of newly declassified information that proves the existence of chemical munitions in Iraq since 2003. The information was released by the Director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte, and contained an unclassified summary of analysis conducted by the National Ground Intelligence Center. In March, Senator Santorum began advocating for the release of these documents to the American public.

“The information released today proves that weapons of mass destruction are, in fact, in Iraq,” said Senator Santorum. “It is essential for the American people to understand that these weapons are in Iraq. I will continue to advocate for the complete declassification of this report so we can more fully understand the complete WMD picture inside Iraq.”

The following are the six key points contained in the unclassified overview:

• Since 2003 Coalition forces have recovered approximately 500 weapons munitions which contain degraded mustard or sarin nerve agent.

• Despite many efforts to locate and destroy Iraq’s pre-Gulf War chemical munitions, filled and unfilled pre-Gulf War chemical munitions are assessed to still exist.

• Pre-Gulf War Iraqi chemical weapons could be sold on the black market. Use of these weapons by terrorists or insurgent groups would have implications for Coalition forces in Iraq. The possibility of use outside Iraq cannot be ruled out.

• The most likely munitions remaining are sarin and mustard-filled projectiles.

• The purity of the agent inside the munitions depends on many factors, including the manufacturing process, potential additives, and environmental storage conditions. While agents degrade over time, chemical warfare agents remain hazardous and potentially lethal.

• It has been reported in open press that insurgents and Iraqi groups desire to acquire and use chemical weapons.

Pre-war quotes from "lying" House and Senate democrats...

"In 1998, the United States also changed its underlying policy toward Iraq from containment to regime change and began to examine options to effect such a change, including support for Iraqi opposition leaders within the country and abroad.

In the 4 years since the inspectors, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al-Qaida members, though there is apparently no evidence of his involvement in the terrible events of September 11, 2001."

"It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein wiill continue to increase his capability to wage biological and chemical warfare and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons. Should he succeed in that endeavor, he could alter the political and security landscape of the Middle East which, as we know all too well, affects American security."

John Kerry on the floor of the Senate
October 2002:

"With respect to Saddam Hussein and the threat he presents, we must ask ourselves a simple question:

Why?

Why is Saddam Hussein pursuing weapons that most nations have agreed to limit or give up?

Why is Saddam Hussein guilty of breaking his own cease-fire agreement with the international community?

Why is Saddam Hussein attempting to develop nuclear weapons when most nations don't even try, and responsible nations that have them attempt to limit their potential for disaster?

Why did Saddam Hussein threaten and provoke?

Why does he develop missiles that exceed allowable limits?

Why did Saddam Hussein lie and deceive the inspection teams previously?

Why did Saddam Hussein not account for all of the weapons of mass destruction which UNSCOM identified?

Why is he seeking to develop unmanned airborne vehicles for delivery of biological agents?

Indeed.

But there was also a plethora of evidence, posted numerous times here on FR, concerning the existence of the actual types of WMDs claimed at the time.

Why the Right continues to concede this argument and ALSO allow the propaganda that WMDs were the chief reason for the war in the first place, is a mystery to me.

The definitive book on the Bush administration’s reasoning for going to war is War and Decision by Douglas Feith, who was Rumsfeld’s deputy secretary at the time.

http://www.amazon.com/War-Decision-Inside-Pentagon-Terrorism/dp/0060899735

This is the one historians will read to understand what actually happened. What emerges is that the administration’s motivations were totally above board and admirable and that the Left’s “Bush Lied” meme is total bunk.

They put the emphasis on the wrong thing. Saddam’s terror connections, his al Qaeda ties and his likely involvement in the 9/11 attack were the primary reasons for the invasion and should have been presented as such. WMD’s were the secondary issue. With all the help Saddam was getting from corrupt Security Council member states, we should have anticipated those same states helping him get rid of them.

I see Colin Powell’s fingerprints all over the war strategy. And because it was his exit strategy that kept Saddam in power, he wanted no part of any Saddam/AQ/911 connection.

WMD’s were the secondary issue

You wish. "The main reason we went into Iraq was WMD" straight from the horse's (GW) mouth:

You'll have to change up your strategy a little bit after you view this one.

Yeah, I see that's your talking point. I don't have to change anything. Bush's emphasis on weapons that could be and were easily moved in the 18 month build-up to war was a mistake. De-emphasizing Saddam's documented terror-ties, included his connection to al Qaeda was a huge mistake. But I said this in my first post. You ignored that and pushed forward with your agenda. Because the facts of the Saddam/AQ connection are like poison to anti-war zealots like yourself.

But while we have you here, explain this away for everyone:

In addition, al Qaeda reached an understanding with the government of Iraq that al Qaeda would not work against that government and that on particular projects, specifically including weapons development, al Qaeda would work cooperatively with the Government of Iraq.

And there's more. Lots more. We'll take them one at a time.
