Anatomy of a Rumor: The Story Behind Chief Justice John Roberts’s ‘Retirement’ (GT prof. prank)

Everyone is wondering: Where did that erroneous rumor of an imminent retirement by Chief Justice John Roberts come from? The gossip spread like wildfire, triggering thousands of texts, blog posts, and emails — a few hundred of them to the ATL tips line — before Radar, which first published the rumor, retracted its report.

We were skeptical, which is one reason why we didn’t write about the gossip as quickly as some other outlets. We reached out to the Supreme Court’s Public Information Office after we heard the rumor, and we didn’t want to write about it until we heard back from the PIO (or at least gave them a little time to respond).

Of course, we have many Supreme Court sources other than the official ones — and they reacted with extreme skepticism when we ran the Radar report by them. One of our SCOTUS experts actually laughed out loud after we (sheepishly) asked, “Have you heard anything about a possible Roberts retirement?” This source noted that JGR would sooner die — literally — than give Obama the chance to appoint his successor.

Like many a promising legal career, the Roberts resignation rumor traces its origins to a 1L class at Georgetown University Law Center….

Here’s an account of what went down in Professor Peter Tague’s criminal law class this morning, from a 1L at Georgetown Law:

I’m waiting for someone to say it doesn’t matter because ...
“Roberts is just another RINO and there’s not a lick of difference between Roberts and Ginsburg”

I loved the comment [not sourced - ; ) ] that Chief Justice Roberts would rather die, literally, than give Obama the opportunity of replacing him.

That is what stood out to me as well.

Oh please. Sorry people had near heart failure this morning but the prof is not to blame for that. People not checking sources are to blame. From students to journalists to people who consumed the “news” without question.

I think he made his point quite well and ended up unexpected teaching a lesson to a wider class. Well done.

Oh, and my guess is Roberts’ would commened him. The students he’d dock.

My first thought was, “this is a hoax.” I don’t believe anything the first time I read it anymore, even on FR.

I actually believe it was a prank to discredit Drudge. I know he wants to 1st to the scoop, and whoever pulled this knew they would get 10-20,000,000 hits.

There's a clown every day who wants to be a famous hoaxster, and using Drudge for this purpose is like using a lightning bolt to do it.

If true, I think that Chief Justice Roberts should call the prof and give him a “Well played sir!”

The prof could have started any kind of harmless but exciting rumor, if he just wanted to see it spread and prove a point to his students. This was potentially dangerous, he knew it would spread, and one has to ask what his true motive was in doing this.

“Just a Progressive’s wet dream....”

I have been having a real problem with the Left being called Progressive. Socialism is NOT Progressive. Nothing about any of the Socialists in DC is Progressive. It is an abominable corruption of the English language as used in this country.

Not as bad as the corruption of the once-honorable word “Liberal”.

Where did it come from? Probably from the same “Government Motors” CEO in the White House behind the attempt to blackmail Toyota into hiring his UAW cronies.

The number one reason for texting’s popularity is so people can communicate when they should be listening to some speaker. Forget lLs who are supposed to be intellegent adults, this is all over colleges and highschools.

Discredit? How could you say that? He posted it as a rumor! He didn’t post it to mislead.

So you act like an idiot to show what harm idiots can do? There are other ways to teach this.

The professor Peter Tague should be disbarred and flogged. And his students should be barred from ever becoming a lawyer.
Screw them.

Seems to me he did a good job with that lesson. Hopefully the brats (and others) learned something. Cheers to the prof.
