XINRAN XUE, a Chinese writer, describes visiting a peasant family in the Yimeng area of Shandong province. The wife was giving birth. “We had scarcely sat down in the kitchen”, she writes (see article), “when we heard a moan of pain from the bedroom next door…The cries from the inner room grew louder—and abruptly stopped. There was a low sob, and then a man’s gruff voice said accusingly: ‘Useless thing!’
“Suddenly, I thought I heard a slight movement in the slops pail behind me,” Miss Xinran remembers. “To my absolute horror, I saw a tiny foot poking out of the pail. The midwife must have dropped that tiny baby alive into the slops pail! I nearly threw myself at it, but the two policemen [who had accompanied me] held my shoulders in a firm grip. ‘Don’t move, you can’t save it, it’s too late.’
“‘But that’s...murder...and you’re the police!’ The little foot was still now. The policemen held on to me for a few more minutes. ‘Doing a baby girl is not a big thing around here,’ [an] older woman said comfortingly. ‘That’s a living child,’ I said in a shaking voice, pointing at the slops pail. ‘It’s not a child,’ she corrected me. ‘It’s a girl baby, and we can’t keep it. Around these parts, you can’t get by without a son. Girl babies don’t count.’”
In January 2010 the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) showed what can happen to a country when girl babies don’t count. Within ten years, the academy said, one in five young men would be unable to find a bride because of the dearth of young women—a figure unprecedented in a country at peace.
The number is based on the sexual discrepancy among people aged 19 and below.

Well the way they create men without wives is by allowing the rich (a relative term of course) guys to have 4, depriving 3 not so well off guys of wives. That of course doesn't count the ones "out of circulation" as concubines. Makes for lots of warriors, with little to live for, and lots of anger.
I know of a large family in which the mother kept "trying for a boy" after a string of girls. She finally got her boy. She treated him poorly. Now he has deliberately turned his back on her and is out of contact with the family except through e-mail (and the mother refuses to get an e-mail address).
Isn’t this another good example of unintended consequences? Where once again we see how central “planners” don’t have clue?

It hurts. As father of a 35 y/o daughter and my only child I can’t fathom this. Tonight as I entertained at a school party it was a delight to see fathers dancing with their 5, 6, or 7 y/o girls
You would understand perfectly if you grew up in a thoroughly evil culture where you would not be allowed or be able to afford a choice.
The people should kill all their leaders, beginning with the local constabulary, instead of their children. But most of Asia is Stockholm on steroids.
My guess is these one boy families probably raise a very spoiled child.
This article raised a thought that I had not considered before. If there are not enough women for the men, that means the men must import a bride or many will go without marrying. That much is obvious.
But that must mean that those who have a boy are reducing their chance of passing on their genetics - what if their son never finds a bride? While those who have girls will actually be the more successful family, because the odds are increased that SHE will be able to find a husband easily.
So the more enlightened (or whatever reason responsible for sparing the girl child) family will reproduce, while the ones killing their girls may never carry on.
In essence, the family with the girl is actually breeding success, opposite the intentions of the family.
Yeah, I guess baby girls are worth less than nothing in many parts of the world. What morons... they think that all women are good for is to be household servants, concubines, and broodmares. It’s their own throats they’re cutting, but I guess none of them thinks of that.
in about 20 yrs, there will be a subsect of adult American raised Chinese women ruling corporations, hospitals,businesses,surgeries, law offices etc....
