Cash-Strapped States Delay Paying Income-Tax Refunds
Yahoo ^ | 3-5-10 | cnbc

This year, more Americans and businesses may be asking: Where's my tax refund?

That's because cash-strapped states such as North Carolina, Alabama and Hawaii have been forced to slow down issuing income tax refunds to individuals and businesses because of a lack of funds in their budget.

Kansas has hinted that a delay might be possible, and processing paper refunds in Iowa has slowed because the state doesn't haven't enough employees to get them processed faster.

Another state, New York, is still considering whether they'll follow the likes of Hawaii and delay refund payments.

“Pray that November brings a clean crop of congressmen, and that they repeal the 16th amendment, install the Fair Tax...”

I’m not sure if we’re *that* desperate...YET. We need to be - we’re in VERY bad shape financially.

“Knew this was coming. Last summer insisted my husband change his withholding to minimums. He was not a happy camper at that time. Now I’m looking like a genius.”

Good for you.

“well to pay to maintain infrasturcture schools etc...you either pay income tax or property tax....or tolls...or fines...or whatever.

but here in NY they do it all.”

Right - ‘cause you also have to pay for bribery, graft, corruption (unions.)

“You can keep Texas and their “no state tax”.”

Some of the largest states - CA, TX, NY - have huge state governments...however between those three - wouldn't you favor TX? That said, the idea of limited government needs be applied dramatically on these large state apparatchiks.

“Try paying your taxes late and see what breaks loose.”

What would happen if 10 million of us did this? This would challenge the system, and more quickly bring about ‘a hearing’ of our demands (massive overspending.) That is perhaps, what the Tea Parties should be about, if they continue to ignore us. It would be a revolution, without firing a shot.

Some of us would be hauled to jail and would need to be supported by the ‘army’ of disaffected taxpayer revolutionaries.

I never get a state tax refund but wish dear leftist CA, which is broke, would delay the refunds to all the ‘takers’ here in the state — love to hear their whining -—— of course it’s THEIR voting and policies that put CA in the position in the first place!

Most of the takers don't get refunds, because they have never paid into state taxes in the first place.

If and when I get a refund, it is because I overpaid!

SHIPPING and handling is now taxable in CA!!!

I think that it was a way for Victoria Secret to pad their income.

I don't think that there is a tax on shipping and handling, only on the cost of the purchase. Maybe someone who actually knows can settle this. When I was employed and dealing in sales and use tax, the tax was only applied to the cost of the item.

Have the laws been changed?

We filed our AL state 2008 taxes on February 1st 2009 and we didn’t get our refund until almost July in 2009. Not expecting anything different this year.

LOL!!!!

Glad to know so many people don’t mind paying more as long as they get more services.

People should be happy that their money is going to people who really need it - like illegals, overpaid government labor unions, etc.

LOL!!!!

So how do you like your “hope and change”? :D

You must rent. I lived in Texas 17 years

Yeh our small home in the DFW north area requires now $3000.00 per year in taxes of which 2/3rds is school taxes. Plus our auto and home insurance rates keep going up. It's not as bad here like in Ny, NJ, or Ca. but the state does manage to extort it's unfair share along with the ripoff insurance companies.

I don’t know, CA paid ours back pretty fast, within a week or two of e-filing.

Not that I relish having to pay them mind you. Them’s just the facts for our situation.

Waiting on the feds now. I suspect they’re going to a bit slower. Have to pay for votes doncha know.

RE: “If and when I get a refund, it is because I overpaid!”

If you had a decent accountant you would not be overpaying in the first place. Why do you want to give the govt. a free loan of your money? The OBJECT is to come out even, not have to pay more, and not get a ‘refund.’

In a perfect world overpaying would not be an issue. Problem is many self employed people overpaid this past year.Their incomes dropped and they were making quarterly payments reflecting the previous years tax liability.

“You mean there are states that have a state income tax?”

We get the bonus in NC. We have one of the highest incomes rates in the South AND one of the hightest sales taxes in the South.

Everyone knows you can tax your way to prosperity.

Certainly will NOT make those taxpayers who opted for the “Loans” from various sources based on income tax refund very happy, will it?

Their interest just keeps growing and growing with such delays.

Knew this was coming. Last summer insisted my husband change his withholding to minimums. He was not a happy camper at that time. Now I’m looking like a genius.”

Good for you, lady.

I gave the same advice to many people still drawing a payroll check.

NC did the same thing last year. They have all the people in the world to process payments. They admit they are waiting for tax receipts to come in to cover the refunds going out. I filed electronically and I had mine in 10 days which ironically was the day they announced they were delaying the refunds.

Already?

Most people can hardly even file before the first week of February because of so many organizations dragging the tax documents out to the last minute.

I’d guess that not even half the people have filed yet.

I’m glad ours is done.
