Lawmakers working to craft a new comprehensive immigration bill have settled on a way to prevent employers from hiring illegal immigrants: a national biometric identification card all American workers would eventually be required to obtain.
Under the potentially controversial plan still taking shape in the Senate, all legal U.S. workers, including citizens and immigrants, would be issued an ID card with embedded information, such as fingerprints, to tie the card to the worker.
The ID card plan is one of several steps advocates of an immigration overhaul are taking to address concerns that have defeated similar bills in the past.
The uphill effort to pass a bill is being led by Sens. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), who plan to meet with President Barack Obama as soon as this week to update him on their work. An administration official said the White House had no position on the biometric card.
"It's the nub of solving the immigration dilemma politically speaking," Mr. Schumer said in an interview. The card, he said, would directly answer concerns that after legislation is signed, another wave of illegal immigrants would arrive. "If you say they can't get a job when they come here, you'll stop it."

Yup. If there’s a buck to be made with ID cards, someone will do it. I forsee a combo of forgery and govt employees selling blanks on the black market.
It’s called human nature. Libs never take it into account.
They have every tool they need already, but refuse to enforce the law. How does further restricting my freedom address the problem? Not to sound conspiratorial, but it seems like there are larger, anti-freedom, forces at work, and that they have been growing in strength over the last 20 years...

I can’t believe Schumer actually admitted that!
When we amnestied the last group of illegals, there were about 3 million...that brought us 20 million.
If this one passes, looking at it historically, this amnesty will get us about 100 million more and the USA will cease to exist.
ID for citizens is NOT the answer!
Secure the border, enforce the law.

Once again, what is U.S. Citizenship worth, if illegal immigrants have access to all the same rights? Our forefathers fought to give us self-rule, and today’s leaders are shoveling as fast as they can to bury that concept.
I am insulted, that people can walk across our borders and demand equal treatment. Damn it, send the interlopers home.
Willingly signed into law by the best, most conservative president in our lifetimes, mind you.

Yes. He is still committed to immigration "reform."
The only difference between 2009-2010 and 2005-2007 is that he is a bit quieter about his "commitment," because if Obama pushes amnesty, McCain is going to get caught (and politically crushed to death) between proponents of amnesty and opponents of amnesty.
Obama rushing into amnesty this year will provide all the necessary ammo for J.D. to politically eviscerate McCain.

I would opt for a nice, soul-cleansing bath in a vat of boiling oil, followed by a nice horse ride (with four horses at once, AKA drawing and quartering) as a way of letting our political class know how we feel about them. Or, for some of the “randier” males, like Chris Dodd (of “waitress sandwich” fame with ol’ Teddy No Pants, who, by the way has been sober now for most of six months) a LONG visit in the embrace of the iron maiden. A two-to-three MONTH visit would be doable if you’re careful not to let her get too excited and squeeze all at once!
