Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather, speaking on the GOP's expected strategy against Democrats in elections this fall, said Republicans would describe President Obama as "a nice person ... very articulate" but an ineffective leader who "couldn't sell watermelons if you gave him the state troopers to flag down the traffic."
Rather prefaced the comments, made Sunday on the "Chris Matthews Show," by saying, "The Republicans will make a case and a lot of independents will buy this argument."
Rather is known for his homespun anecdotes, though his choice of language in this instance already is raising some eyebrows on media blogs, which note the potential "racial minefield."

aaawww, it’s just crazy Uncle Dan
Another Dan Blather quote that has all of the charm and timeless essence of a ‘54 Chevrolet on the side of the road in West Texas on U.S. 90, missing all but one of it’s hub caps, as the armadillos and rattlesnakes play Three Card Monte in the back seat, as vultures fly overhead.
You shouldnt make too much from this reference to watermelons. After all it isnt the fact that Obama is half-black that is offensive to Americans.
It is the fact that he is all Communist.
Actually, in defense of Dan Rather, this Watermelons/State Troopers comment is standard fare. People really do say this all the time. Rather’s mistake was one of context and forum.
Dan Rather Makes 'Watermelon' QuipRather is known for his homespun anecdotes, though his choice of language in this instance already is raising some eyebrows on media blogs, which note the potential "racial minefield."
Oh Jeez! (slappin' head)
Give me a fricken break. Now the mention of Watermelon is Racist.
Someone needs a slap upside the head -- with a Louisville Slugger!
(Nothin' beats: 'A Good Piece Of Ash'.) (snicker)
It’s just item # 1,345,857 in the catalog of media double standards. The practice is so commonplace now that it barely elicits complaints from Republicans or Conservatives against whom the bias is employed. We just expect it as a matter of political fact, and move on.
Before it’s over, Rather’s words will be depicted as Republican’s being racist.
Seems like Kenneth got the wrong frequency.
By the way, I thought that watermelons referred to “green activists” who were green on the outside but red (commies) on the inside.
Dan’s comment gave Chrissie the buckwheats!
Obama couldn't couldn't sell condoms to bro's in the hood if he nationalized Trojans..........................
Obama couldn't sell stolen bling to his homeys if George Soros said it was ok..........................
Ok, I tried...........
I just watch the video. Matthews jumped in real fast when he realized what Dan was saying about Obamie.
LOL !
RATHERISMS....
Excellent point. I'll bet that Rather was just trying to point out 0bama's failure to sell the Country his cabal.
Isn't that ridiculous!
But of course Obama could remove all this crap from popular culture (if he were really a post-racial person) by simply repeating to Americans that such statements are not racially motivated and, even if they are, they are just words.
Banning words is completely unconnected with changing hearts so as to kill racial prejudice. The best way to stop the use of words to tease is to simply become insensitive to them. Any school boy knows this.
That said, Obama is, in his own way, just as much a race baiter as Sharpton or Jackson. He has a vested interest in keeping racism alive!
“control the language, control the people”
I think Americans are getting sick and tired of Obama's Orwellian BS.
One ... ONE comment like that from ANYone on the right and there would be NYT headlines, numerous calls for prosecution, and a WatermelonGate Congressional Probe.

Right, he could. Easily. Just a simple word from Gibbs in any press briefing. That everyone should 'knock it off with the that's offensive 'carp'. That he's above that nonsense and everyone else should be too'.

As my momma taught me with that old saying, 'Sticks and stones can break your bones but WORDS will never hurt you.' (everyone's mother basically taught that in the olden days)
*** That said, Obama is, in his own way, just as much a race baiter as Sharpton or Jackson. He has a vested interest in keeping racism alive! ***
Yes he is. He does it in a sneaky way where he appears to be above it all, but isn't. He plays both ends against the middle. Obama's basically a back stabbin' snake.
