Israel exerts sovereign right to its capital as Biden looks on astounded
Jewish World Review ^ | March 10, 2010 | Paul Richter

In the midst of a high-profile visit by Vice President Joe Biden, Israel on Tuesday unveiled plans for new housing in disputed Jerusalem, a surprise step that embarrassed and angered the highest-ranking Obama administration official yet to visit the country.

Biden, who had come to promote new peace talks and to smooth the Obama administration's strained relations with a longtime ally, instead denounced Israel's plans to build 1,600 new housing units in East Jerusalem as a threat to the search for peace.

"I condemn the decision by the government of Israel to advance planning for new housing units in East Jerusalem," Biden said, calling it "precisely the kind of step that undermines the trust we need right now."

"We must build an atmosphere to support negotiations, not complicate them," Biden said.

The sharp turn of events abruptly changed the tenor of the trip in its second day, coming just hours after the vice president proclaimed his love for Israel and declared enduring U.S. support. Biden's visit followed a year of tension brought on by Israel's defiance of the Obama administration's admonitions on precisely the same issue: housing settlements in disputed areas.

In Washington, the White House added its own criticism. But it was unclear how deeply the latest step by Israel would affect ties between the two countries, which have been strained by tensions over the Jewish state's hardline security measures.

Aides said Biden raised the issue with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a dinner given in honor of the vice president's visit. U.S. officials have repeatedly warned Israel that such development in Jerusalem would anger Palestinians and further threaten prospects for peace.

Biden is to deliver a major address on U.S.-Israeli relations on Thursday. He will also meet with Palestinian and Jordanian officials.

There are a lot of us out here who hate Obama. I will never call him president.

So they won’t need to ask for US help then?

Guess they don’t really need sanctions either, since God is on their side.

Israel wants to build and the leftists want to tear down.

Tearing things down is “peace”.

The Muslims are not interested in peace. Israel gets blamed for the lack of a “peace process” even though they are the only ones really wanting peace.

Israel is going to have to nuke 50 Islamic cities if Iran launches on them. I hope its ready.

I have no doubt where our politicians will stand.

Israel is getting tired of the Obama administration. This is Israel's way of saying, “BULLSH*T,” while acting like it's sneezing, then apologizing for getting bugees all over Biden.

Nope....Because the first thing Ahmanutjob will do is attack the Straits of Hormuz. Which will shoot the price of gas thru 5 bux a gallon pretty quick. The US Navy has already said it would not allow them to do so. THe 2nd thing they will do is target our bases on each side of them.

Don’t for a minute think we will not be involved.

“Obviously, Israel will be on its own dealing with Iran.”

From what I read recently, they may not be completely on their own. Several of the ME muslim states have supposedly told Israel that they would appreciate such action!

Even only overflight permission and noninterference helps the Israelis immensely.

No, God will be with them.

That's the best part, it won't even be a remotely fair fight. :)

But God also said this to the nation of Israel:

” ‘But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land, those you allow to remain will become barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will give you trouble in the land where you will live. And then I will do to you what I plan to do to them.’ “

Don’t agree at all.

Why would Iran want to draw the US into a fight that is basically between it and Israel? Makes no sense strategically.

More likely they’ll let Hezbollah wage a proxy war in northern Israel, while they stand back and let world opinion damn Israel as an “outlaw state” and a “threat to peace”.

Lot less work that way. I just don’t see the US or NATO countries involved directly in the fighting.

"Why would Iran want to draw the US into a fight that is basically between it and Israel? Makes no sense strategically."

We are not discussing a country of "logical" planners. They consider themselves the true heirs of Mohammad, and intend to launch Holy War. The rest of the islamic world must follow, or become infidel, and be destroyed.

I doubt if the "strategic thinking" extends much farther than that.
