Bet the guy couldn’t change his own oil or change plugs. What a maroon.

I saw the television interview with the driver. When asked why he didn’t put the car in neutral he said he was too busy driving in and out of traffic and couldn’t complete that complicated task. Somehow it was easier to pick up a cell phone, dial 911 and carry on a conversation while driving 90 miles an hour than to shift into neutral or turn the key to the off position.

This story stinks or this driver is nuts. Oh wait, the driver is from California; never mind.

Maybe Toyota needs to check the mental health of this guy. He could have been setting his family up for life on a lawsuit settlement by them claiming his death in a car accident was Toyota’s fault and then he chickened out on following through ramming his car into a wall at high speed.

Don’t need to disable the steering lock on a ‘69 Beetle. The steering won’t lock unless you turn the key about 1/2 of a turn after the ignition shuts off. No way to do it by accident.

My first car was a ‘69 Beetle, loved that car.

I’ve seen rear disk brakes with drum parking brakes in the middle on Mercedes-Benz cars and also on a ‘75 Imperial with rear discs.

Little green whinney babies drive Prius’s. This guy was probably wetting his panties. Wish I could have been there to see it.

Without a doubt. I heard that 911 call on the radio. Mancard should be revoked. What a pu55y.

1. Place in neutral. I have read that newer cars (what are those?) will not allow a car to overrev.

2. Turn off key one notch on straightaway, and turn back on if needed.

Now here is a question for the techs. You are driving a truck diesel (Int. 466), and cable to the fuel shut off brakes, which is how you stop the engine, which is now roaring - in neutral and stopped. How would you stop that?

And how could they have stopped that bulldozer a man used to wreck havoc on the property of his enemies a few years ago?

Some people are just so stupid they shouldn’t be given driver’s licenses. Thought the car would flip????

There are plenty of stupid people out there. This guy is stupid like a fox. He has an angle, I'm just not yet sure what it is.

What is a darn shame is, what is wrong with the media, that they cannot smell a fraud and ask the right questions to protect the public? Look what a cost to our country (Obama)!!!!

We are all creatures of habit, and most of us have no habit of shifting into neutral, just using the brakes and accelerator. Hindsight is 20-20.

Creatures of habit without intelligence should not be allowed on the highway. An armidilla is also a creature of habit.

>> I can understand concern for turning the key off because of the power steering issue

I’m not sure what power steering gets you at 90 MPH. Probably better without it at that speed.

IMHO the whole thing was fake

That's what I thought when I first heard it, too.

Whenever I think of this, it makes me want to throw something through my tv receiver.

Why did the reporters, even on Fox get duped again and waste the public's time? Can't they smell a hoax, or at least an idiot? Is this what they are taught in jounrnalism school?

One Toyota mechanic has speculated that if the driver has wet feet when they get into an electric car, they will short-circuit some wiring in the car. Hmmm ...

Same thing happened to me as a college student - A woman, obviously intoxicated or high, slammed into my parked van and shot it into three parked cars ahead of mine. She hit it with a very expensive Lexus at 55 mph on a 35 mph road.

All of the other car owners begged me to get into a class action lawsuit against the woman for whatever the hell they were after from this obviously well-to-do woman.

I simply looked at all of them and said “I’m not the suing type.” People like that disgust me. That’s why you buy insurance.

Not too panicked to call 911 twice.

If you really thought your life was on the line, you would care a less about the engine getting destroyed. In addition I would bet the car’s computer would prevent it from killing itself.

The only thing about turning the key off, is you have to be very careful how far you turn the key off. Too far and the steering locks... That would be bad...
