Birth Tourism
National Review - The Corner ^ | March 16, 2010 | Mark Krikorian

Posted on 03/16/2010 7:44:32 AM PDT by La Lydia

First there was Korean birth tourism, where pregnant Korean women would come to the United States as tourists in order to ensure their babies were U.S. citizens. Then Tucson hospitals started offering "birth packages" to expectant Mexican mothers. And now, this:

With more Turkish parents wanting their child to be born in the US, tourism companies are starting to offer 'birth tourism' packages to US cities. Many women say giving birth in the US has benefits including cheaper education and fewer visa worries. Some Americans, however, want to restrict the practice, citing fears of illegal migration...

Arrrrrrghhhhh! For many people, including some here at the Corner, the solution is to end automatic citizenship at birth, but I'm not a fan...The way we determine citizenship is simple and decentralized — we need to do a better job of tracking birth records to ensure they're legitimate, but if they are, that's all you need to demonstrate citizenship, so there's no need to petition a bureaucrat in Washington.

But . . . if you're going to keep automatic citizenship at birth, there are two things you can't do — wink at massive illegal immigration (almost one out of 10 births in the U.S. is to an illegal alien...) and give visitor visas to pregnant women. Amazingly, our consular officers are not permitted to turn down a visa applicant simply because she'll soon give birth. That needs to change so that the default position is that women who might give birth during their temporary stay here should not be approved for visas. Otherwise, foreigners will be able to decide completely on their own who will and will not be a member of the American people....

This needs to stop. We are fools. People from the Far East, Taiwan, Hong Kong, have been doing this for decades. The Mexicans crawl across the border to give birth on American soil. I disagree with him. We need to end birthright citizenship.

I need a wife, my old one went elsewhere, I have seen some beautiful Russian women, with the proper diet hopefully they won’t evolve into a ballooned Babushka.

“With more Turkish parents wanting their child to be born in the US, tourism companies are starting to offer ‘birth tourism’ packages to US cities.”

We should give them complete access like they agreed to give us when we went in to Iraq and then tell them, sorry, suckers, we changed our minds...like they did...screw them.

If you pay them not to work they will not work.

If you pay them to make babies they will make babies.

If you let them let their children be citizens, they will do it.
Pretty simple really.

And it’s only going to get worse. Overlooked last week is a new law and bureaucracy, the US TRAVEL agency, spending billions of tax dollars to promote MORE foreign travel...MORE anchor babies, to go back to their home, grow up and vote to influence our elections....or just stay here forever!

Harry Reid pushed this bill for his Vegas buddies, and Obama signed it last week.

The first time I ever saw the term “anchor babies” was years ago in an article about South Korean birth “tourists”. It is insane that we continue to allow this sort of thing. Citizenship should come from the parents, or from naturalization, or from marriage, but not from the mere fact that someone was born on US soil.

“However, the Bear Stearns investment firm and others have concluded that the actual number of illegal aliens in the United States could be as high as 20 million. When using the higher estimate of 20 million illegal immigrants and FAIR’s 33 births per 1,000, this would roughly double FAIR’s estimate to approximately 574,000 to 726,000 anchor babies born in the U.S. each year.”

Agreed. Anyone who is out actively recruiting this sort of business needs to go to jail.

They also need to look at these diploma mills that bring in foreigners to get bogus Masters Degrees, which turns into an F1 OPT temporary work visa, which eventually leads to a green card and at some point, citizenship.

How about charging for this priviledge. I suggest a starting rate of $50000 for permission to have an anchor baby. Additionally, they are restricted from the use of public funds. All proceeds go directly against the national dett.

I could open a can of worms and state something about these anchor babies replacing those who have been aborted. Couldn’t I?

I agree wholeheartedly!
That law was fine when the country was young and we needed the people.
We have got enough now.
BTW, I am a birthright citizen.

If the socialists were in charge birthright citizenship would stop by noon. It is a health care cost issue.

The author is deluded. Nearly every civilized nation accords newborns the same status held by its mother at the time of birth. If mom’s a tourist, so is the kid. Citizen mom? Citizen kid. Illegal mom? Illegal kid.

But what if the mom is legally present, temporarily, because we have given her a tourist visa? That’s what this is about.

Hello? The socialists are in charge. The trouble is, birthright citizenship conflicts with their open borders agenda and they haven’t figured out what to do about it.
