My guess is that: 1. the intern/staffer had no clue, and 2. they wanted to get you off of the phone.

It is always a good plan to ask for the name of the person giving you the information. If it were dead, as of 15 minutes ago, do you think the bottom-tier flunky answering the phone in some obscure congressman’s office would know about it that fast? I’m not saying it isn’t dead, I’m saying it is always a good plan to verify.
