To Repeat: Doctors Could Hang It Up

Health Overhaul: We were harshly criticized last September for an IBD/TIPP Poll that showed 45% of doctors would consider leaving medicine if a health care takeover passed. A new poll has vindicated our findings.

Our questionnaire went out Aug. 28 to some 25,600 doctors nationwide. Of that substantial sample, we got 1,476 responses. One hundred of those were retired, leaving 1,376.

At the time, virtually no one had stopped to ask doctors how they felt about the medical takeover being discussed in Congress. We thought it was vital to ask them, since any overhaul would rise or fall on its implementation by doctors themselves.

To say we were stunned with the results is an understatement.

Of the physicians queried, 45% said they'd consider closing their practice or retiring early if the overhaul then being considered were enacted. Also, 65% said they opposed the government's attempts at taking over the health care system. Just 33% supported it.

Given that the White House and Congress both promised then — as they do now — to provide health care coverage for 31 million new patients while at the same time cutting costs from the $2.4 trillion a year we spend on medical care, we thought it was important to reveal that doctors wouldn't go along with it.

What we found was that of the 800,000 physicians practicing in the U.S. in 2006, as many as 360,000 might leave the profession. So with the proposed overhaul, we'd be trying to cover 31 million more patients with up to 45% fewer doctors.

Impossible. It can't be done.

You don’t understand it fully. The lowest paying physicians... internists, family physicians and pediatricians to name a few (most non specialists) will not make a profit after reimbursement. At a physician forum with our representative there were two internists there who said that they would be working at a net loss and they had numbers from their practice to back it up. When you only are being reimbursed/paid $60.00 for medicare and $45.00 for medicaid it becomes difficult. When was the last time you saw a professional and paid that amount of money let alone a physician? You can get a manicure and pedicure for $50.00....but we are talking Doctors here and your health not your nails!

I really don't give a rat's ass what you think Peck’A`Head!

My “mentality” is very clear on this,,,

O’Bammy and his bosses are doing their very best to make

the USA a commie/moozzi country,,,

Look past O’Bammy and Soros and you will see the Saudi’s

ass deep to a draft horse in all this mess,,,

If you can't make a bunch of money to suit you by all means

quit and go to work at the local undertaker's parlor...

In your previous post you admit to”having a problem in math here” which only reinforces my argument. While I agree with your thoughts about “O’Bammy” the rest if your diatribe is more than a tad offensive and non productive.

Are you saying that it will be illegal for doctors to opt out of Obama-Care? I can contract with a doctor and pay him whatever I think is fair, much more than Obama-Care will pay out.

A similar example was in the news today. Walgreen is refusing to sell prescription drugs to those on Medicare in Washington State, because they cannot afford to charge that little.

They are opting out of the program, not getting out of the retail prescription drug business.

Honestly, as a doctor I can imagine 20-30% of doctors quiting

I personally know two anesthesiologists (one in my church, and am related to another) who are in early 50's. They have both told me they will retire early if 0bamacare passes....
