Feds on Facebook

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. law enforcement agents are following the rest of the Internet world into popular social-networking services, going undercover with false online profiles to communicate with suspects and gather private information, according to an internal Justice Department document that offers a tantalizing glimpse of issues related to privacy and crime-fighting.

Think you know who's behind that "friend" request? Think again. Your new "friend" just might be the FBI.

The document, obtained in a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, makes clear that U.S. agents are already logging on surreptitiously to exchange messages with suspects, identify a target's friends or relatives and browse private information such as postings, personal photographs and video clips.

Among other purposes: Investigators can check suspects' alibis by comparing stories told to police with tweets sent at the same time about their whereabouts. Online photos from a suspicious spending spree - people posing with jewelry, guns or fancy cars - can link suspects or their friends to robberies or burglaries.

I think this is very wise, actually. People go on Facebook etc. voluntarily and put out their information in public. Why should law enforcement ignore it?

I agree with that...kids and strangers...and scarey people who can’t find a date!

I have a friend in Calif. who soon learned the men she met there were not exactly the cream of the crop...rather the bottom feeders! I tried to warn her but some people are just stubborn. She could have gotten hurt ya know!

"...real militia members never use facebook. They meet at the hardware store. Usually over near garden tools."

Yeah. We already know that you've posted that before on several second amendment sites and your private chats with some of your other patriot friends. /s

Thank you Panaax!

Frightening indeed. That's why I have not or will not post pics of myself online, especially on Facebook.

Personally, I know that my uber-liberal, in-your-face-lesbian boss trolls FB all day looking at what people have posted, and she will use anything she finds and deems inappropriate against a person - I have seen it happen.

Once somethings out there, all it takes is a mouse click to save it forever.
