WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democratic lawmakers say party leaders are considering winning crucial support from abortion foes for health care overhaul legislation with an executive order by President Barack Obama.
The order - which does not require congressional approval - would be aimed at reflecting long-standing law barring federal aid for abortions except for cases of rape or incest or when the mother's life is threatened.
Democratic Reps. Henry Waxman of California and James Oberstar of Minnesota both said an executive order was under discussion by party leaders.

That set the guidelines that are in place today - Executive Orders can't undo enacted legislation, or violate the Constitution. Thanks for explaining that. Nationalizing an industry by executive order! I didn't realize Truman was such a socialist.

That EO will last about as long as it take to complete the up or down vote.
Tell us another one, Barry.

"I didn't realize Truman was such a socialist. " It's a little more complicated than that. It happened during the height of the Korean War. There were price control issues (due to the rising cost of steel because of war-time demands), and labor disputes that Truman felt would jeopardize the war effort.
There were other options available to him, but for personal and political reasons, he decided to go down the nationalization route. The Supremes slapped him back.

Pro-abortion members won't like this unless Obama assures them he will later rescind it.
Yeah. Wink wink. Nudge nudge. And IIRC there's no implementation for four years, just taxation; Hussein can wait till after the 2012 election to rescind the EO and Joe Sixpak can be re-elected twice before TSHTF. Or whatever. The camel's nose is under the tent, and 2 1/2 years is a long time.
