Philadelphia police said a "flash mob" with thousands of teenagers and young adults swarmed South Street Saturday night causing businesses to close early and bringing law enforcement from across the city to control the crowd.
--snip-- Mobs of teens have disrupted Center City three times in the last three months. On Dec. 18, students from several city high schools responded to a call via Facebook to participate in a massive gathering in response to fights at the Gallery food court. Some of the teens later randomly attacked pedestrians on nearby Center City streets

This story is not real journalism without the essential demographic information regarding the mob.
Therein lies the politically incorrect NEWS that we should all be aware of.

Pretty sad this is what they are using their energy for. If they had any brains they would protesting the take over of their government which will affect them more than most of the people fighting for them.

Interesting that the “race” of the [youts] was not included in the article. Perhaps these [youts] are upset with us who are against their boy’s health-care bill.

“A 54-year-old man riding his bicycle home from work was critically injured when he beaten by a group of young men.” Just think. This could have made the national news if the victim had been Amish instead of the perpetrators. Also doesn’t this “newspaper” have an editor? Or maybe he be on vacation.

Having grown up around Philly in those days (1963 or so) I always thought the line was "the hippest street in town".
But the official (record company) rendering of the first line is "hippies", meaning "those who are 'hip'" in the jazz lexicon. The song came out years before San Francisco-style hippies were known to the East Coast. The song refers to "hipsters", that is, cool R&B/soul/jazz-oriented folks.
See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippie_(etymology)#Hip.2C_hipster_and_hippie, third paragraph.

The home of American Bandstand. Back in the day when (most) R&R was positive, fun, and great new dances popped up all the time. American Bandstand was one of my favorite TV shows. WFIL ruled and Dick Clark was on the right hand of God...

I was only 11 when "South Street" came out in 1963, but I was already somewhat aware of music; started playing piano at 6, and picked up guitar at 12...
The period from about 1958 to 1967 was the first great wave of rock-n-roll; the second great wave from 1967 until 1976 was more produced and often more pretentious. I lived them both, and loved them both, but the first will always be the one that made me aware of modern music.
