Daily baths and showers polluting the environment

Showers and baths are polluting water supplies partly due to growth in shampoos, gels and skin products, new research claims.

By Richard Alleyne, Science Correspondent Published: 11:15PM GMT 24 Mar 2010

Researchers have detected substances in water supplies that have come from prescription drugs and toiletries.

In the past environmental concerns have focused on sewage as a source chemical pollution as it is thought antibiotics and the active ingredients of pills are flushed down the lavatory.

But now the new research by the US Environment Protection Agency suggests that waste from showers and baths should also be looked at.

Dr Ilene Ruhoy, who coauthored the study reported at the American Chemical Society annual meeting, said that scientists have long known that bathrooms are a "portal" for release of so-called active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) into the environment.

An active ingredient in a pill is the medicine, usually combined with binders to hold the pill together, stabilisers, and other inactive ingredients.

However, scientists and pollution control officials had previously assumed that lavatories were the main culprit, with APIs excreted in urine and faeces and flushed into sewers and sewage treatment plants.

From what I understand, it’s not that big a concern in Britain.

And if the germophobic medical community didn’t advocate clean, clean, clean, and kill every germ you can find, people probably wouldn’t be taking baths and showers every day.

Add these kooks with Sheryl Crow’s “one sheet per wipe” philosophy and we’ve got a pretty, uh, fragrent society.

I used to live in Europe. Later back in the US I worked here with many visiting from Europe on business.

Europeans did not bath as often as Americans.

Can you imagine how low the ppm level must be if you’re worrying about medicines in the sewage? Can you imagine how vanishingly small the ppm level must be after its release into the river?

This sounds like yet another fake crisis.

If I’m wrong, then the right answer is to add another step or two to the treatment before you release back to the river. The wrong answer is to try to control millions of people in order to get that last ppm of bad stuff out of the sewage.

This new trend is certainly good news for those in the cologne business.

Maybe a good time to buy stock in Old Spice.

Well Global Warming is dead so now we must find something else to wring our hands about. Wouldn't it be better for them to worry about menstruating women bathing in the Ganges or something? Or too many Polar Bears fouling the North Sea? Amazingly every product they are worried about was made from natural ingredients ( because if it was made on earth, it was made from products from Earth)

It seems to me there was a time research was used to find ways to solve problems. Today it seems that research is used to find problems and then get money to solve it.

My solution is to cut all funding for any new research and studies.

The Enviro-Nazis do not realize that there would be a lot more air pollution if people did not shower. Go to Disney World in the summer with all the foreign tourists around....if you do not believe me....showeing cuts down on air pollution

Where I work we have had a bunch of African students work through the summer. And the first thing management tells them this is America and you can take a bather everyday.

Wow! Next they will require separate sewer lines to each residence. One for the toilets, one for the showers and one for the kitchen sink. And just think the human race survived somehow to this point by just squating on the ground or peeing on a tree. And then we just threw it out the windows onto the street.
