Detroit ~ We have a family antique that was manufactured in the city when Detroit had just 100 families.

The whole family subsequently moved South into Indiana ~ which has far better weather.

My brother once moved to a Detroit suburb and in that year they had exactly 1 day of sunshine.

He moved away quickly.

Detroit has never been a good place to live. WIth the loss of its industrial base it's back to normal!

I teach at a local community college. I showed my class pictures of the neglect of Detroit as part of my career planning unit last week. “This is what happens when whoever is writing the checks just decides it is not worth it any more. This is what happens when Atlas really does shrug.” The entitlement generation actually listened.

So, a Democrat controled government did to Detroit what Pontiac and his wariors could not do back in 1763.

Detroit is dying.

It's the most liberal city in America.

It's Utopia...

Fantastic article. As someone who gets to see the ugliness that is Detroit up close on a somewhat regular basis, I can attest to the fact that it has been a lost cause for quite some time. In a normal market situation, when prices hit rock bottom, some enterprising developer would come in, bulldoze a few square miles, put up a gated, guarded and protected development, be able to sell the new neighborhood at a price that is much lower than suburbia and still make a huge profit. Detroit is so far gone, that even the people that still live there now, wished that they didn't.

the Tea Party could do worse than use Detroit as a crystal ball for America...if the status quo isn’t changed.

Foreign-trained physicians who can pass the U.S. tests are coming to America. They are competitive.

Where is the outcry about the loss of jobs for Americans? It's just a variation on outsourcing. I heard recently that half of the doctors in training in the USA (interns and residents) for primary care are foreign educated.

The city planners, the Federal government's subsidy defenders, and the welfare state aficionados are all discreetly silent about Detroit.

Personally I find it ludicrous beyond belief that Detroit actually has urban planners still at work there. Sort of like boiler tenders on the Titanic.

Interesting. The New York Times is reporting that, “Detroit also saw a 38 percent annual increase in its median home price. That brought the median up to $55,000.”

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2010/03/23/business/AP-US-Home-Sales-Midwestern-Cities.html

The Detroit News says, “Overall, the median sales price in Detroit was up 22 percent in February to $7,005 but the number of sales in the city dropped 23.5 percent to 671.”

http://www.detnews.com/article/20100317/BIZ/3170343/Metro-Detroit-housing-sales-rise#ixzz0j9O95yea

I wonder which one is lying?

WOW. I knew Detroit was in horrendous condition, but a $7,000 median house price???? WOW. And like the article says, nary a word from that fine MSM. They’re far too busy chasing racial ghosts at protests. Sheesh.

I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before on FR, but some years back I worked for a company with branch offices in Chicago and Detroit (among other places).

Lemme tell ya, folks. For all the talk of “The Chicago Way”, Chi-town ain’t got a darned thing on Detroit when it comes to government red tape, inefficiency and corruption. I have never seen a more hostile business environment in my life.

Go to Bing Maps; do a 'bird's eye' of the area. See for your self.

Block after block of desolation.

Try Gary Ind. or East St. Louis. Same thing.

Welcome to the USSA . . . comrade.

When a city simply shuts down from the effects of government mismanagement, the media say nothing. Detroit has become the poster child of government regulation, welfare systems, and a population that has given up hope.

What's the need to complicate a very simple societal autopsy?
Incompetents are repeating the cause of the death of Detroit wholesale, on a national level, as we speak.

When the number of idle and unproductive plus the army of public employees necessary to "tend to them" exceeds the number of productive, the system begins to die.

When the numbers are skewed further, and the rate of taxation on the productive necessary to support the parasites pulls them down to the level of the idle and the public employees, they are left with just two choices : flee --- or join the idle or join the public employees.

Total collapse then ---must follow.
A sharp second grader can understand that.
