Three weeks to save Hollywood sign
Thursday, March 25, 2010 » 03:22pm

A conservation group says it has just three weeks to raise 3 million US dollars to save the iconic Hollywood sign from being razed by investors who want to build luxury houses on the site.

Tim Ahern of the Trust for Public Land says they feel they have a good chance of doing that.

The group needs to raise money to reach the 12.5 million US dollars needed to purchase the 55-hectare parcel of rugged land surrounding the sign from a Chicago-based consortium that has acquired rights to build four luxury mansions along the ridgeline.

Private donors to the fund include movie and television companies and Hollywood stars such as director Steven Spielberg and actor Tom Hanks.

“Pooped?! This is how you refer to my having entered this earthly atmosphere??”

“I was not born in the bushes behind the sign, but in a Hospital with a good view of it. Not that I remember that.”

You are lucky Bart Stupak was not there. He would have had you murdered so he could get a few luggage carts and runway lights for some aiport up in N. MI.

...was trying to show my university fraternity mates about the time someone jumped off the letter L, I think.

What the HELL does THAT mean? You're an accessory to a jumping? I can only hope it was into a hot tub!

In due course, among the sign restorers was, of all people, Alice Cooper-—who paid to have one of the two O’s restored, dedicating it to the memory of Groucho Marx.

I never really cared for his music -- before my time and not my style -- but Alice Cooper turned out to be a pretty cool dude.

That’s what I thought. When I lived there, I took a hike through Griffith Park to get a closer look at the sign. It was guarded by a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy. The sign is in the park, and maintained by a trust established for that purpose.

The sign is in a state park.

Could be a scam. According to this website the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce owns and maintains the monument.

It is 138 acres on the summit behind the sign.

Please give.

Forget it. They produce little but trash today, and the Hollyweird elite trash America every chance they get.

Burn the sign down and give the property to the developers.

Bollywood produces more entertaining stuff anyway.

I liked most of his music between Easy Action and Welcome to My Nightmare, though the latter was his first solo album and the previous albums had been Alice Cooper the band. Alice Cooper the band was a kind of watered-down take on such as the MC5 and the early Stooges, but they were fun anyway.

Alice is a conservative and golf nut.
Well, one out of two ain't bad. (I never did care too much for golf . . . )

Here’s a link to an article on Peg Entwistle, the actress who leapt to her death off the HOLLYWOODLAND sign in 1932. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peg_Entwistle
Why do the Welsh have to be so tragic?

No rational human gives a rats a$$ about a stupid sign such as this. This is a silly conceit.

I agree.

Though Hollywood has become a pit of smirking overpaid talentless liberals, the sign itself does not reflect that.

It reflects a time when Hollywood was cool, a time when the overall product was classy and yes, even family-friendly.

It reflects a by-gone era - but at the same time, it’s completely historical and worthy of saving. When people think of Hollywood, I suspect that this sign automatically comes to mind.

To let this sign disappear because Hollywood has become a purveyor of sometimes junky movies and even worse yet, misguided entertainment figures, is akin to cutting off your nose to spite your face.

And best yet, private money is being used to save this sign. I can’t disagree with that.

Opps, I stand corrected. Public funds were used.

That’s a no-no in my book.

Certainly a few actors and actresses could chip in a few bucks for this sign. It is a pretty cool sign. 3 million dollars for hollywood is chump change.

Yes, I think so, although I haven’t been there in a few years.
