Map: Track Census Participation By Neighborhood

2010 Census National Participation Rate: 34%

A "Mail Participation rate" is the percent of forms mailed back by households that received them. To find your area's 2010 Census participation rate using the map, enter your zip code, or your city and state, in the search field and click the “Find” button. Once you do this, a national view of the map will appear with a data window on the exact location you chose. The mail participation rate for that area will be featured prominently within that window. From here you can either zoom in or compare that area's 2010 participation rate to its 2000 Census participation rate. To learn more about the map and how it works visit our help section by clicking on the question mark above.

Geographic lines on this map, such as those for state or county borders, have been simplified to shorten load times, and thus are only approximate. The Take 10 Program provides participation rate data for incorporated places (cities, towns, villages) but not for unincorporated places. Please try zooming in to the next level for tract data or zoom out to the level above for county data.

The Mail Participation Rate is the percentage of forms mailed back by households that received them. The Census Bureau developed this new measure in 2010, in part because of the current economy and higher rates of vacant housing. The rate excludes households whose forms were returned to us by the U.S. Postal Service as “undeliverable,” strongly suggesting the house was vacant. We will still follow up on all these housing units to ensure everyone is counted.

Mail Participation Rate is a higher number than the Mail Response Rate we have used over the last decade, but it is a better measure of actual participation and therefore an easier goal to achieve when residents mail back their forms. In 2000, the national Mail Response Rate was 67% and the comparable national Mail Participation Rate was 72%. The Mail Response Rate is important to help us plan for the important door-to-door workload that begins in May during which we visit all households that have not returned a census form.

Apparently all those people who turned in their census:

a) cannot read

or

b) can see into the future

because the census asks for how many people are living at the address on APRIL 1st. I won’t know until then so why give them a reason to charge me with fraud? I wouldn’t put it past them. Mine goes in the mail April 1st.

Okay, here some rambling thoughts I have on the census (originally I said it was a question, but I ended up not actually asking a question...).

There is a little leaflet enclosed that says to fill out the census and return it within the next week. We got it in mid-March.

Then, the census itself says it’s supposed to be a snapshot of the population on 4/1/10.

So how can anyone fill it out and send it in before then? I mean, things happen. Yeah, I hope everyone that’s here now will still be here on 4/1— and likewise I hope my oldest sister doesn’t end up moving in with us between now and the, but you get my drift.

The local library stocks census forms - free for the taking in English, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese...I wonder if there will be an over-count?

51 % in my town. The dems returned the thing, the Republicans threw it in the trash.

Its just money, nothing important.

I have gotten a total of 3 mailings in as many weeks about this: the first, "it's coming - please participate!"; second, the intrusive form itself; and then a postcard early this week wondering why I hadn't sent inmy form yet (I'm thinking about it - or not.)

In my entire life I can't remember as much angst being made about this process and as much money being poured into it in the past.

Ah crap...
National and California are at 34%, but my county is at 38% ...
Well, I'm doing my part to drag the number down (... I'll eventually turn in my form - minimal information; with a big black X through their 'ethnic question' - and "AMERICAN" hand written in ... maybe with a copy of the text of the Constitution which says the Census is to count the number of people in the household... But eventually - no big hurry).

The Republicans should return it, too, with just the number of people in the household. That's what I do, otherwise the Democrats get overrepresented when they apportion new seats for Congress. I refuse to answer all other questions.

So far, I have gotten
...a letter telling me they were going to send me a census form...
...a census form...
...a postcard reminding me to send in my census form...
I haven’t went it in yet,
since it asks me how many people
are living here on April first,
and it is not April first yet,
and I do not have a crystal ball.

The question is even posed in the past tense: "how many people LIVED in this residence on April 1."

I'm with you; it would give the fascists an excuse to intrude even further by claiming fraud.

I’m tempted to answer that 50 people lived at my house on April 1st and then say “April Fools!” when they question me. Somehow I don’t think they’d find it funny.
