The sound of Super Hornet fighter jets has been ringing across parts of south-east Queensland as they fly to their new home at the Amberley Air Force Base west of Brisbane.

The five Super Hornets left New Zealand Friday morning and are planning to criss-cross above the skies of Brisbane as well as the Gold Coast and Ipswich.

They are due to land at the Amberley air base at 1:30pm (AEST).

RAAF Group Captain Steve Roberton says they are the first of 24 to be based at Amberley, replacing the F-111s later this year.

"We've been flying them for over 12 months," he said.

"Our aircraft we've only had for the last three or four weeks so they're shiny new and we've hopped across the Pacific through Hawaii and Pago in Samoa - dodged a couple of cyclones and we've got them to Auckland and we're ready for the final leg today."

I agree that is a beautiful sight...

but, you haven’t seen anything...

if you have never seen an F-14 Tomcat go screaming by at full throttle!!

The real star of “Top Gun” was the Tomcat, not the other tom...

as a former squid, I have seen some wonderful things...

an F-14 in after-burner and a battleship firing the 16’s.

Both are something you actually feel in the gut.

I would like to see and experience an F-14 flyby at full throttle.

There is one thing better than that. I got my troubleshooters to take me out to launch an F-14A off the ship. A models needed afterburner to take off. It totally rattles the teeth in your head.

Troubleshooters are the guys in the white jerseys

yeah, but when you park one of those things, better have a host of 55 gallon drums to catch the fluid that leaked out of them....i never anything leak more than in f-14...

I was both a plane captian and a troubleshooter....and now I am half deaf...standing a coupla feet behind the engine, full throttle with afterburners lit, holding on to a padeye for dear life with one hand, and holding a thumbs up with the other is no way to go through life....
