A newly released survey shows that for the first time, more Californians favor same-sex marriage than oppose it.
Since the Public Policy Institute of California began tracking attitudes on same-sex marriage in the year 2000, residents in the Golden State were always more likely to express opposition. But the latest survey, released Wednesday, found that 50 percent of residents now favor it and 45 percent are against it.
The findings come two years after 52 percent of California voters passed Proposition 8, a state amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The California Supreme Court last year rejected lawsuits against the amendment, ruling that it was not an illegal constitutional revision by the people nor unconstitutional.
But two of the nation's top litigators – Theodore B. Olson and David Boies, who represented the opposing sides of the Bush v. Gore case in 2000 – filed a federal lawsuit, arguing that it violates the Equal Protection Clause.
Testimonies in the Prop 8 case wrapped up in January but the case was prolonged after Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker ordered opponents of the amendment to turn over campaign materials and internal documents.
According to the PPIC survey, support for same-sex marriage declines with older age, but rises as education and income increase.
Residents in the San Francisco Bay Area are more likely than those in Los Angeles to support allowing gays and lesbians to marry.
Meanwhile, an overwhelming majority of evangelical Christians (75 percent) are opposed to it.
The PPIC survey is part of a series that examines the social, economic, and political trends that influence public policy preferences and ballot choices. Findings are based on a telephone survey of 2,002 California adult residents interviewed on landlines and cell phones from March 9-16, 2010.

Sounds to me like they just keep polling till they get the numbers they want.
Didn’t they show surveys like this before Prop 8 yet Prop 8 was approved?
2000 out of 35 million. This poll is a joke.
But they will be forced to live in a society (of which they are part and vastly outnumber the proponents) that tolerates it.
When PC and Christianity collide, why must it always be Christianity that loses?
The Bible is very, very clear on the issue of homosexuality, as well as abortion etc. There is not even any room for discussion on either of these issues. Anybody that believes otherwise, simply does not have the Spirit of God within them, Case Closed!!
The homosexual movement is just one of the tools the Communists use to divide us, and to spit on the Bible!
The only survey that counts is an election.
The key is to never be quiet never succumb. When people are exposed to the reality of what homosexual activism is they are always more likely to oppose it. It is only when we remain silent and send our kids off to be indoctrinated that we lose.

Silenece should only be used when its to shame. Ie- turning your back en masse on someone to get the point across.
Otherwise, Its using calm logic and questioning THEM.
And more and more videotaping it and putting it on youtueb and facebook so people SEE the difference.
Additonally, pulling all children out of public school and start homeschooling and putting your kids into christian Programs to combat the misinformation.
The poll is of “adults” not likely voters. Similar polls were done in previous years. An actual vote today would probably have the same result as in 2008.
Whats clear is that however “adults” may think on this issue, most support is casual and the issue only seems important to a small number of proponents, while it is important to a larger number of opponents, who are the sort of people who are more likely to vote in the first place.
From what I’ve seen in the western world, Christianity has lost to convenience and secularism for the better part of the past 200 years. It doesn’t say much for Christianity when it has been eradicated as a serious movement in many of its core countries.
This poll is a lie, I live in California, we are still against gay marriage here. That poll is bogus
Could it be that the conservative residents of California have slowly moved OUT of the state ?
U-HAUL ( the trucking and moving company ) has done yearly surveys of resident outflows and inflows and they tell us that hundreds of thousands of California residents have been leaving for the past 3 years and the net outflow EXCEEDS the inflow by hundreds of thousands.
Of course U-HAUL does not survey the political persuasions of those moving in and out but IF those moving out are the conservatives ( and there is good reason to believe that ),
it looks like most of those who choose to remain because of the generous welfare and goodies they get from Sacramento will be liberal.
If so, this explains the shift in general favorable attitude towards gay marriage.
Does your state have it in your constitute that marriage is only between a man and a women?
Why? What changed? More and more conservatives leaving the state?
