Utah governor signs bills to seize federal land
ap ^ | March 28, 2010

Two measures OKd by Gov. Gary R. Herbert would allow use of eminent domain to take valuable sites. A long court fight is likely.

Supporters hope the bills, which the Republican governor signed Saturday, will trigger a flood of similar legislation throughout the West and, eventually, a U.S. Supreme Court battle that it hopes to win -- against long odds.

More than 60% of Utah is owned by the U.S. government, and policy makers complain that federal ownership hinders their ability to generate tax revenue and adequately fund public schools...

Initially, the state would target three areas, including the Kaiparowits plateau in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, which is home to large coal reserves...

Growing marijuana and such is rampant on Federal land...I understand a good bit of it is done by illegal aliens.

Yes... The Lippo Banking Family of Indonesia. They had bank operations in Arkansas at the time Bill Clinton was Governor. The Escalante fraud was a quid-pro-quo, involving donations from the Chinese via Indonesia. THAT IS WHY BILLY SHOULD HAVE BEEN IMPEACHED, not for perjury about his affair with Monica Lewinsky. That and his selling of our missile technology and nuclear warhead secrets to China!

George, you’d hear my cries of glory all the way at your house if Alaska did this too. Few things would make me happier than seeing NPS thugs kicking rocks, south-bound, down the Alcan. I can only dream.

Its nice to see UT leading the way, and I’ll keep myself optimistic that others follow suit.

I’d be all for this if they weren’t going to squander the money on Government Child Imprisonment and Abuse Centers.

What the fed gov has done to Nevada is obscene.

Check out the book 'Land Gone Lonesome' by Dan Oneil sometime. It covers a lot of land-use/grab issues on the Yukon River following Carter's ANILCA land-grab.

Thanks George.....I remember the brouhaha when Clinton shut down coal mining on the Kaiparowits Plateau; wanted to make it a national park. Did that ever happen?

Or was it just a payback to the Lippo Group..

"What the fed gov has done to Nevada is obscene."

Probably, but it's little more than the federal colonies grabbed off in CA. The entire Lake Tahoe Basin is one such colony ripped out of the eastern ends of Placer, eldorado and one or two counties in NV.

The degree of unconstitutional land tyranny in that part of America is exceeded only in the Yosemite federal colony to the south. Thomas Jefferson expressed it best when he wrote, "and states shall be further divided into counties, each to govern what lies within their bounds."

In our post constitutional government run by a post constitutional CONgress, it's become a given that they will trample, transgress and trespass against not only states rights, but counties as well, while our post constitutional POTUS cheers them on!!!

Crushing the local governments closest to the people for fear they might allow done what local poeple want done is simply unconstitutional tryanny instead of liberty!!!

Too bad AK didn’t collect it’s collective wits fast enough when another Deemonicrat POTUS, Jimmy Carter used his pen to rape AK!!! Between Carter, Clinton and now numbnuts, we’ve gotta git this stuff stopped in some permanent way. But it’s hard when they just sit there ginnin and pissin on on the sacred constitution of this vast bastion of good land and good people!!!

UT would be one of the wealthiest countries in the world with just teh clean coal.

Perhaps. I'm still waiting for someone to point out the existing transportation and power infrastructure that would enable recovery and delivery of this coal, let alone the optimum mining methods.

This was available for a long time; nobody with the expertise felt it was worth reaching into their wallets to pay for it.

As a proud Utahn, I have to agree with you on the child prisons, however, this will free up the rest of the state’s income to better address our infrastructure and industry. You rock, Governor Herbert!

Where in the Constitution does it allow for the federal gov’t to take 60% of a states land with no say so from the states?
