Iran seen behind Hizbullah effort to undermine new Iraq government

The Iranian-sponsored Hizbullah has expanded operations in Iraq. Officials said Hizbullah Brigades have been operating in several areas of Baghdad. They said the group's campaign was meant to exploit tension between Sunnis and Shi'ites.

Officials said Iran has increased support to Hizbullah in an effort to undermine the Iraqi government and security forces in the wake of elections on March 7.

They said the elections have raised tension between Shi'ite factions, particularly the ruling party led by Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki and his rival, former Prime Minister Iyad Alawi. Al Maliki has demanded a recount of the vote. "There are signs that Hizbullah has been expanding activities," an official said.

Officials said Hizbullah has been targeting Iraqi and U.S. security forces in Baghdad in the first three months of this year. They said the attacks included improvised explosive devices and rocket strikes against patrols and bases.

On March 18, Iraqi security forces arrested a suspected Hizbullah operative in northern Baghdad. The operative was detained as part of efforts to capture what officials described as a brigade leader of Hizbullah.

"Acting per a warrant issued by an Iraqi judge, ISF and U.S. advisors searched two residential buildings for the suspected KH [Hizbullah] leader who is believed to be responsible for carrying out attacks against security forces in Iraq," the U.S. military said on March 20.

Neither the detainee nor the Hizbullah brigade chief was identified. Officials said the detainee was believed to be a criminal associate of the wanted Hizbullah operative.

Most of Iraq's counter-insurgency efforts have been directed at Al Qaida. On March 21, Iraqi security forces arrested six suspected Al Qaida operatives who specialized in assembling bombs around Baghdad and Mosul.

Really!

Was it the 7 years of manufacturing the roadside bombs that finally gave it away?

Iran is the root of most troubles in the middle east outside of Afghanistan. They should be eliminated if we really want peace over there.
