This Week in Progressive Media
Who is more of a threat, left-wing crazies or right-wing crazies?
For its coverage of the Hutaree Militia story, Firedoglake.com carries Rachel Maddows extensive reporting of the FBI infiltration and capture of the members of the violent Christian militia group. Maddow tries to gauge the seriousness of their threat, describing the oddly named militia as a strange combination of absurd and scary with names out of a Calvin and Hobbes strip but spends 10 minutes exploring who they are and the charges against them. Are they representative of other right-wing groups? A guest on her show, reporter Ed Brayton of the Michigan Messenger Web site, describes them as very dangerous but also so fringe that they constitute the wingnuts wingnuts.
The question of who is worse, right-wing or left-wing radicals, and how to label radicals cropped up again most recently when pundits raced to describe recent Pentagon shooter John Patrick Bedell as right wing and conservatives lashed back that he was left wing. In a Washington Post op-ed, Eugene Robinson argues that for the past few decades the most serious threat of domestic terrorism has come from those who draw inspiration and rhetoric from the far right.
It is disingenuous for mainstream purveyors of incendiary far-right rhetoric to dismiss groups such as the Hutaree by saying that there are crazies on both sides. This simply is not true. There was a time when the far left was a spawning ground for political violence. The first big story I covered was the San Francisco trial of heiress Patricia Hearst, who had been kidnapped and eventually co-opted by the Symbionese Liberation Armya far-left group whose philosophy was as apocalyptic and incoherent as that of the Hutaree. There are aging radicals in Cuba

The Weather Underground bombed the Pentagon in the 1970s. The Weather Underground robbed banks to fund their activities in the 1980s.
What decade is Eugene starting with and who's he calling "right wing"?
You do realize that for people like this facts are just irritants that get in the way of their propaganda.
There were terrorist plots (bombing, kidnapping) by leftists (tried and convicted) at the 2008 RNC convention and it got NO national media coverage (strictly treated as local stories).
Left wing crazies control the White House, Congress and U.S. mass media. What do they need militias for?
Do you remember when some white-bread, Republican AG let them off the hook?
Bomb the Pentagon (Obama's buddy William Ayers).
The way this is going to go down is that more than a few of these nine dumbasses are going to be threatened with life sentences in the presence of their lawyers. Even without resorting to enhanced interrogation, the FBI has a 1 in 9 chance of getting someone to remember patchy details of a random plot. No doubt with coaching from the FBI. The world won't miss these retards, and that's approximately how it will go down.
Truth is, freedom loving American citizens are dangerous to this current government and rightfully so. Rebellion is not far away if trends continue. The question is in what form will it take and by what means will it be quelled?
Chicoms: 96 million murdered
Soviet Union Commies: 66 million murdered
National Socialists: 20 million murdered
Communist Vietnam 3 million murdered
Khmer Rouge Cambodia 3 million murdered
It is a fact that all genocide and nearly all mass murder come from the left and Islam, the farther left and the more the homosexual influence, the more the murder.
I could go either way on whether that specific animal belongs in a cage (for the crime in question). My point was that this sort of thing has always been in the left's playbook.
black panthers?
The Armenian genocide came at the hands of the Ottoman monarchy, but I agree with your point all the same.
EVE!!!! NAME ONE RIGHT WING RIOTin the USA.....Just ONE!!!
The oeleft are agian accusinnt the right of the very things of which they are guilty.
Nice ply but no ones laughing as they usuually do. Why?
Because any mistake you make about it can get you killed. Maybe thats a good thing.
During the Bush admin. 99% of the "vitriolic, anti-government hate speech" on talk radio was spewed by the Left, and it was quite commonplace. But did Newsweek or any other left-wing rag write articles about it? Of course not.
It is interesting to note that the left insists on calling people like the slimeball at Ft. Hood as “alleged blah blahs”. However, no “alleged” is necessary when talking about this militia, despite the fact that they have, apparently, never done anything except run their mouths.
They’ve got the lipstick on the wrong cheek.
Absolutely correct, and the Islamic connection aside, I have been preparing arguments for a theory that in a Monarchy the "state" is similar in operation and theory to a communist "state". In other words, effective philosophies of a Monarchy and communist state, are very similar.
what makes this group rightwing?
I hadn't even thought of those in addition to all the left wing riots. The WTO comes to mind because I live in WA state and I knew people who were stranded downtown because of the riots, and I remember seeing the fires in the street and windows being smashed on the news.
No, by FAR the left wing is more dangerous and more violent...and more prevelent.
And many of the events that had been blamed on the right turned out to be the left attempting to frame the right. A brick through a Denver DNC office for example, as I recall, turned out to be a democrat. The guy who carved FED into his chest and then hung himself...the left accused the right and it turned out to be a suicide and attempt to frame the right yet again.
The SEIU thugs at town halls, the leftist biting the finger off an anti-Obamacare protester, Ried supports egging buses in NV...the list goes on and on and on and on...and to my knowledge, no confirmed instances on the right, although maybe this militia group might qualify, but I haven't seen enough to even know they are right wing types...they surely appear to be nut case types assuming the information released is accurate, but given that it's being released by Obama's people truth can't be assumed.
Why do you even call them nutjobs? What have they done that has been proven? Have we heard ANYTHING but the govts side of the story, and very little of that. They have been intentionally vague, so as to find out what conspiracy theory, and what kind of story will sell. When you have hard facts on your side, you air them willingly and openly. When you are trying to smear reputations, you let the rumors lead the story.
