BUTLER TWP. – Saying he “has had it” with defending the recently passed health care reform bill against false allegations, U.S. Rep. Paul Kanjorski Wednesday told the Hazleton Chamber of Commerce that he is determined to “debunk the myths” and “refute the criticisms” of the legislation.
Kanjorski, D-Nanticoke, who will turn 73 on Friday, said the health care reform law that was enacted last week will not slash Medicare as many critics have claimed and it will help small businesses afford health coverage for all of their employees.
Kanjorski spoke at a breakfast hosted by the Keystone Job Corps Center.
“Medicare will continue to exist and this bill will begin to close the ‘doughnut hole’ in Medicare for seniors,” Kanjorski said.
Seniors will start to see immediate relief from high prescription prices with a $250 rebate for Medicare beneficiaries who hit the “doughnut hole,” which the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will issue guidelines about in the coming weeks, Kanjorski said. The legislation also makes preventive services and immunizations free under Medicare starting in 2011, eliminating co-payments for preventive services and exempting them from deductibles.
Kanjorski railed about the critics of the health care bill, challenging them to read and understand it.
“If everybody would just stop lying about it and take the time to understand it and know what’s in it, the debate would calm down,” he said.
Kanjorski said the bill will improve the affordability and accessibility of health care. He said it also provides many immediate benefits that will start this year, including providing tax credits for small businesses to help them afford health insurance for their employees, prohibiting insurance companies from dropping people when they get sick and from placing lifetime caps on coverage, and enabling young adults to stay on their parents’ health insurance until age 26.
“The health care reform law is about enabling the American people to choose the most affordable health insurance that best fits their and their families’ needs,” Kanjorski said. “It will take a few years for many of the details of the legislation to go into effect, but there are many provisions that will begin to benefit people this year.”
The 13-term Democrat said the law will lower costs for everyone and give all Americans and small businesses more control over their health care choices.
“Soon, people will be able to see these benefits and insurance companies will no longer have the upper hand over what types of insurance Americans can access,” he said.
Kanjorski explained that the law provides tax credits for small businesses to help them cover their employees, exempts many small businesses that are too small to afford to cover employees, and enables employees to choose the health insurance that best fits their individual and family needs through the health insurance marketplace created in the law.
“Many small businesses struggle financially to provide health insurance for their employees and many are still unable to because of the extreme costs,” Kanjorski said. “Insurance premiums have doubled over the last 10 years and were expected to double again over the next 10 years if we had not taken action to rein in health insurance costs.”

One question for this clown: Why is it necessary to spend $1 Trillion dollars on new legislation when we already have laws that do the EXACT SAME THING - HIPAA AND CHIPRA?
