Requesting Freeper Help and Information on Thailand P.M. Abhisit Vejajiva (Vanity for information)

Freepers in the know:

I am looking for perspective on Thai politics as viewed through a Conservative spectrum.

P.M. Abhisit Vejajiva - friend or foe? My reading of him seems to show a lean that would be favored by U.S. Republicans, but I do not want to jump to conclusions.

Anyone who has any genuine wisdom to offer on the topic, please chime in or Freepmail me! Thanks!

I am looking for wise Freeper opinions on Thai P.M. Abhisit Vejajiva, and whether he is someone we should support, or if we should support his opponent(s).

Consider it a request for foreign policy information. ;-)

I work with someone that was there recently, and found out that the Government is extremely corrupted. This person was ministering to Prostitutes (Thailand has one of the highest prostitute rates (of young women less than 15 years old.) This person also learned that the US State Department frequents the brothels without fear from the government, and also are completely corrupted. Surprise, surprise.

I understand that, and was quite aware. But I also know that it’s a universal thing in Thailand. It’s very sad, but true.

I was looking more along the lines of governance, etc. Positions, policy toward U.S., things like that.

I know, for example, that the U.S. militray is very welcomed in Thailand, and that they have recently helped the U.S. in a local “war Game” exercise.

Anyhow, thanks for that. I really am looking for any info........

He is totally useless and has absolutely no leadership abilities. The man is a puppet for those who are really holding the power in the country. If he wasn't appointed to the position of PM, he would have never been able to attain the position in any other way.

Totally not true. Prostitution in Thailand is legal but anything involving minors is illegal and will get you locked up.

Sorry to disagree, but I have a friend that was just there ministering to young prostitutes, and that is what she told me. It is against the law, but the police and even the State Department are being bribed...The younger girls (under 15), are the biggest prizes of all.

Sorry to disagree, but I have been living in Thailand for the past 6 or so years. It is amazing the number of stories I have heard, none of them true, from both bar girls and from those who come to help 'save' them. Underage, less than 18, girls in bars are few and far between since it will result in the bar getting shut down and the owner arrested. Do you realize that the girls working in the bars are all there by choice and do it because it is easy money?

If you want to talk about prostitution in remote border areas, that is a different story. What goes on there is horrible but it is far from anywhere a western tourist will ever go.

Is it better to go save souls of Thai prostitutes than of Black murderers in inner city America.

Hey, that is not my area of ministry, I just passed on what she told me. It apparently is a very bad situation, and she was a real saint for volunteering to spend three weeks to try to help. I was particulary impressed with the State Dept. person that actually told them that they were partaking...

In other words she gave three weeks of free English lessons to bar girls.

I was particulary impressed with the State Dept. person that actually told them that they were partaking...

This is a shock? Would be more of a shock if they were not.

No, I don’t believe so. The reason for the post, however, is that this good woman took her time and resources to try to help people come to G-d. Is it better to save a young girl than a young black man..I don’t think so. G-d gave her the resources and the heart to help in this circumstance, and I think she should be appreciated for that. I personally have given both to young prostitutes and young Blacks (not murderers), so I feel led to give to both..As far as saving souls, that is up to the G-d of Abraham, Issac and Jacob.

You underestimate the power of G-d..these young girls, if anything, were given a different direction to turn...and by the way, I am sure that in your own life, someone that was completely out of your life made a difference in your life, so I wouldn’t completely poo poo the efforts of a good hearted person.

You underestimate the power of money. These women can pull in more than $50,000 US a year when they would otherwise be making about $4,000 US at a normal job. At the upper end they can double or triple that. They are there by choice and no amount of preaching to them about how it is morally wrong in YOUR world is going to change that.

I can only go on what my friend told me, and they did make a difference. They were able to provide another job for these girls. And by the way, the girls didn’t get $50000, their handlers did. The girls that they helped were very glad to get out of the trap.

They were able to provide another job for these girls.

What job did they find for the girls? Where is it located? Still in Bangkok/Phuket/Pattaya? How much are they making at their new job? Is your friend in touch with the owner of the new company? Does she regularly check they are still working there?

And by the way, the girls didn’t get $50000, their handlers did.

Their handlers? Please. Your friend really fell for it. Again, the women are there willingly and freely change bars whenever their earnings start to drop. They will have guys buy them expensive gifts such as gold and it is common for westerners to wire them thousands of US dollars per month into their personal accounts. Their 'handlers' don't get any of that. It is pure profit.

the trap.

Which trap is that?
