FBI warns letters to governors could stir violence ["Guardians of the Free Republics"]

WASHINGTON – The FBI is warning police across the country that an anti-government group's call to remove governors from office could provoke violence.
 
The group called the Guardians of the free Republics wants to "restore America" by peacefully dismantling parts of the government, according to its Web site. It sent letters to governors demanding they leave office or be removed.
 
Investigators do not see threats of violence in the group's message, but fear the broad call for removal of top state officials could lead others to act out violently. At least two states beefed up security in response...

Wasn’t there an article a couple of days ago saying that the state government in one of the southwestern states went on the alert due to a warning of some sort from the FBI to the governors?

I suspect this is chiefly another effort on the part of the FBI to increase tension and anxiety and to villainize conservatives.

Is it now a crime to ask a governor to step down? I thought that Obama and the NY Times just did precisely that to Governor Patterson a while ago—and then pressured him in various ways until he agreed not to run against Andrew Cuomo.
