Fifty-four people were arrested Monday morning after hundreds of young thugs rampaged through Times Square and Herald Square in what cops say has become a new Easter night tradition of Midtown mayhem.
Four people were shot - a man and woman in Times Square and two women outside of Macy's. They were taken to Bellevue Hospital with relatively minor injuries.
The overnight melee - in which the police appeared temporarily overmatched - resurrected old urban specters.
Mayor Bloomberg called it "wilding" and Manhattan Boro President Scott Stringer warned of "reliving the bad old days of the 1970s."
Police said the three wounded women were innocent bystanders caught amid surging groups of gangbangers, most of whom had been to the annual car show at the Javits Center.
"This city is going to hell. People shouldn't have to worry about being shot, especially in Midtown," said a fuming Tena Hemingway, 23, of Brooklyn, whose 19-year-old sister, Iasia Manson, was shot in the elbow outside Macy's.

Given this report, it may be that table salt is not the first priority in NYC... just a preview of what may be a long hot summer all across the country, with a lethal combination of contempt for the government and a sense of entitlement come together.
Easter Sunday in New York City = “Gang Initiation Day”

“In past years, the NYPD and businesses have beefed up security in the area on Easter Sunday, which has become known in certain circles as “Gang Initiation Day.”
In previous years, the youths, many sporting their gangs’ colors, gathered first at the Auto Show at the Javits Center and then made their way to Times Square.”

I remember a lot of them crying when he "Disneyfied" Times Square (evicted the porno shops). They can now take comfort that the good ol' days are returning.

I’m not so sure that Bloomberg is a limp wristed lib so much as some weird, not yet classified mental illness. He only seems interested in stuff that personally annoys him, like smoking and salt, but goes after it with the determination of a crazy person.
The bit about his relationship with salt is telling. The man is an insatiable salt junkie. Normal people can’t eat the food he serves. But he has been told a lot that this much salt can’t be good for you. So his response is to want to use the law to ban it.
The pattern shows up again in that he used to be a smoker, and maybe had a hard time quitting, or has been told he must quit. So his response is to lash out at other peoples’ tobacco. He is also highly afraid of assassination, so he wants to ban guns.
Some psychiatrist could make a career of this guy.
Sure, I’ve no doubt that he has left-squishy-liberal tendencies, but they are so overwhelmed by whatever squirrels he has in his brain, that I really have no idea what he will do next.
If the squishy liberal part is in control, he might order the gangsters released. But while on their rampage, they might have killed a pigeon or something, for which he will want them put in prison for life.
Life under the rule of a crazy man must be unnerving as hell.
