Al Qaeda and othes are just marking time until we leave. By announcing the 2011 departure date, Obama sent a strong signal that they just have to bide their time.
“But this president and this White House do not have it in them to lead our troops to victory in Afghanistan. So they shouldn’t try.”
This is the best reason yet for withdrawing from Afghanistan.
You forgot to add Dising England, our friend for many decades and other nations in Europe all to gain cred from tin pot dictators. Mark my word— the day will come when we will need all the friends we can get.
>.Why couldnt they have proposed that Afghanistan supply opium for drug manufacturers
Because most legal opium comes from Turkey and they ain’t giving up that puppy.
Thanks for the info. A quick google on Turkey and opium was an interesting read after I read your post. It seems we helped to set up Turkey in opium production to help keep the drug off of the black market and now Turkey and Persia won’t allow the US or UN to help other countries in the same way.
And however much we decry Afghanistan’s opium, where is the demand?
And if you’re a farmer, say an acre of opium gets you $500USD, what’s an acre of peaches or plums get you?
In the 19th century India had been the source of most opium, IIRC, but it shifted to Turkey after WWII.
Yes, but only peripherally.
You can almost always predict Obama's next move by thinking of him as being on a mental par with a naive, narcissistic college sophomore who has achieved a position of power.
No doubt you, as I, once had sophomoric delusions of grandeur wherein our public utterances of clear, concise, undoubtedly morally superior commentary would invariably convince all and sundry to mend their ways. The world would be a grand, peaceful place, if they would all just listen to us.
We were too young and silly to understand the difference between people in the real world, and those in our heads who depended on our brilliance. Real people are not so dependent on our words of wisdom. We have, more or less, learned to moderate our expectations with respect to our own brilliance.
Obama, however, does not know the difference. Mentally, he's still that sophomore on whom you and I look back with embarrassment.
And, as a result, Obama simply says things -- hard things -- and he says them to the wrong people, who "need to hear" his wisdom.
He's a menace, because his "on purpose" is so ridiculously immature.
