FBI: No Explosives Found on United Jet in Denver Authorities Say Qatari Diplomat Told Air Marshals, 'I'm Lighting My Shoes'
FBI agents say no explosives were found in the shoes of a Qatar diplomat who was subdued by federal air marshals on a United flight to Denver Wednesday night after allegedly telling the marshals, "I'm lighting my shoes on fire."
Authorities say the diplomat was wrestled to the ground and two F-16 fighter jets were dispatched to accompany the 757 on the final 40 minutes of its flight to Denver. Flight 663 originated from Washington Reagan airport.
A US security official said, "it may have been a massive misunderstanding" and the diplomat's statement may have been a "sarcastic" comment when he was confronted by two air marshals who had been told by flight attendants that smoke was coming from the lavatory.

With as sensitive as people are to the smell of cigarette smoke, the smell should have been immediately recognizable.

But, I guess if he has diplomatic immunity, he can smoke on any plane he wants without repercussions.

They searched the whole plane in 30 minutes and decided that Mohammed was a LONE “Qatari diplomat”?
This was a dry run, to test out our defenses after the Detroit bomber. Apparently it was a success, as this guy was, in fact, able to smoke a cigarette in the lavatory without being molested (he was only caught as he exited the lavatory). That means that he was able to carry on a pack of cigarettes (not a big deal in and of itself, nonetheless ...) as well as matches and/or a lighter (either one IS a big deal), and was able to light up, smoke the cigarette, and extinguish it, all without getting caught. What happened to the smoke alarms in the lavatory? How come he wasn’t busted as soon as he lit up?
I will be interested in what the other passengers have to say before I make a judgment either way.
I do know that burning rubber or plastic is much different than smoke from a cigarette. If it was cigarette smoke, the anti-smoking nazis on board would probably have beat the air marshals to the lavoratory!
It was an idiot, inexperienced reporter and editor who ran with the story before they were sure of their facts.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist but this story sets off my spidey senses on this. If this guys is truly dumb enough to act so ‘innocently’ while we ‘overreacted’ then he should be taken out of the gene pool.
