He already committed a crime by smoking in the lavatory. When he let the “lighting my shoe on fire” wisecrack fly, the marshals had no further reason to exercise any restraint whatsoever. I expect they were 99.99999% sure he didn’t have any explosives on him, but he deserved tackling anyway, and that’s what he got. He’ll have fun “explaining” to his Qatari government bosses (probably “former bosses” would be more accurate). They have a much lower tolerance for asinine behavior over there.

Planning to prevent it from flying into a building holding thousands of people.

What kind of idiot makes a comment like “I’m setting my shoes on fire” and expects nothing to happen.

I'm guessing an idiot whose been consuming alcoholic beverages. Qatar, being a Muslim country and all, takes a dim view of alcoholic beverages. The Qatari government will be completely devoid of sympathy for one of their very junior diplomats pulling a stunt like this and making global headlines. If it comes out that he'd been drinking alcohol, outright hostility is likely to characterize their attitude towards him.

I sure hope he had a nice all-white cloth outfit on him. Gotta keep with the fashion. Swell.

A laugh riot. Throw him off the plane—in flight. Is it 2012 yet.

I agree. In essence, he told an on-duty police officer that he has a bomb and was trying to explode it. Joke or not, it is not something that a LEO can ignore, especially when such attempts were made before.

Most likely he will be sent back to his country; his family is already probably furious because he shamed his country and them personally. His job here was very nice while it lasted, but his hubris, as usual, brought him down.

I was suprised to hear about the air marshalls on board as well. I see them on international flights from time to time, but never once thought I had seen one on a domestic flight. Maybe it was some off duty ATF or DEA agents.

What happened to the smoke alarms in the lavatory? How come he wasn’t busted as soon as he lit up?

They never existed because this story is bullsh*t, is my guess.

He was coming to visit Gov. Bill Ritter and deliver millions of dollars to Bill and Salazar for locking up the vast oil reserves located in Colorado.

Just how would a shoe-bomber accomplish this feat?

You know what...

It was the diplomat that committed the FUBAR.

Let’s keep this in real perspective. He decided to light something up on a plane in flight in or to the US.

It is not like everybody on the plane was doing the same thing. The fact is he was the only one and the Air Marshall’s reactions would have been the same if it had been anyone else on the flight.

Then the little jerk decided to get mouthy. You know what...Saudi Arabia should be the country embarrassed...not us. Your diplomat committed a real security faux pas in a foreign land. Lock this idiot up for a few months, we owe no one an apology.

Wife of passenger on Fox stated hubby said he had been to the lavatory several times before that one.

Her name was Jane Smith.

No lie.

They didn’t search this guy.

Funny, I thought they’d have to ‘dump the contents’ after landing to verify no contraband.

Jets scrambled for cigarette smoke that didn’t set off the lavatory smoke alarm.

Marshals (plural), on a domestic flight.

Now if you were on a flight, you’re a certain type, you’re a consul, you know about 9/11 and security since...
Do you not have that in mind when lighting up in the lavatory? Then you make a smart-ass comment?

Then, out of the blue marshals (plural), have a physical altercation with you over discernible cigarette smoke and/or a wise comment, (which any marshal would know Holder/Obama would side with said Qatar dip vs. our guys, see border guards under Bush).

When were the jets scrambled? When he was still in there or after they smelled smoke?

When did they dump the holding tank?

Did he play the dip card right after they grabbed him, or after he was under arrest and escorted off the plane?

What the hell does that have to do with smoking on a plane or a shoe bomb/burning shoe joke, sarcastic or not re: terror?.

BTW, there was no language barrier, this guy speaks English.

Psst. Guess who’s on Fox tamping this down? FAM MacLean

Remember the whistleblower that let fly there would be no marshalls on international flights for two months and ended up getting fired for the security breach in ‘06?

Yep.

Snip:

The proposal for the executive order was drafted by current and former Federal Air Marshal Service (FAMS) whistleblowers, including Robert MacLean, who was fired after blowing the whistle on plans to eliminate protection on long-leg or coast-to-coast flights to save money, contrary to a congressional mandate that such flights have air marshals.

The information made public by Mr. MacLean was not classified at the time, but was retroactively classified as “sensitive security information” after Mr. MacLean was fired for the leak.

“This executive order will send a message to federal government managers or those employees tasked with combating terrorism and protecting public safety that the new administration will not condone whistleblower retaliation when gross mismanagement and corruption is exposed, or when public safety is being endangered,” the order said.

It asks that a panel be convened to review whistleblower retaliation to determine whether employees should be reinstated.

“The Government Accountability Project believes in the justice of their petition, and we have decided to use all of our resources as advocates to champion this,” Mr. Devine said.

Mr. MacLean says he does not regret blowing the whistle; he just wants his job back.

“I want to serve as if I had never blown the whistle,” Mr. MacLean said. “I want President Obama to bring back all national-security whistleblowers to serve in federal government again.”

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/feb/02/whistleblowers-want-protection/print/

Gee, they were still talking about re-instating these guys Sept. of last year, he got hired back that quick? Strange.

Interesting. I thought even with whistleblower protections it wasn’t retroactive, anyone know?

Back to Fox: Now he’s asked why the plane came down at a very low altitude (re: pressurizing/altitude), while they were escorted for the last 40 minutes into Denver (even though by now it was ‘a misunderstanding’), answer: procedure.

http://twitter.com/rjmaclean

Check the times and past twits.

And Brown Lloyd James represents him, can you say NIAC and Trita Parsi?

They’re real good at PR/cover ups and flipping the press via plants in the news.

Deputy Mayor Samuel Collins-Williamson of Long Branch Beach, New Jersey, who is openly gay, and once made 56 points in a Scrabble game with the word ARABS, had mashed potatoes and carrots for lunch too!

That proves it!
