Stupak Finally Gets It -- Votes Have Consequences (One Rat down, 250 more to go)
Fox News ^ | 4/10/2010 | Marjorie Dannenfelser

Today, Rep. Bart Stupak understands what our group's polling revealed: a vote for Obama's health care bill was a vote against the will of his constituents. Yet he chose to do it anyway and now he is suffering the consequences.

In the final hours of the health care debate, Americans across the country were deeply saddened when Rep. Stupak (D-Mich.) and a handful of “pro-life” Democrats buckled under White House pressure and voted for legislation that will lead to the largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade.

Their cover was a fig leaf -- an Executive Order signed by President Obama that addresses none of the authentic pro-life concerns of the American people. Rather than stand up for the pro-Life American majority Stupak and his gang caved.

Before his fateful vote, Rep. Stupak had been a national pro-Life leader who championed the unborn and their mothers. The Susan B. Anthony List had even planned to honor him with our Defender of Life award. The decision to leave office makes it clear that, finally, Stupak understands: Votes have consequences.

In the days leading up to the health care vote our polling in the first district of Michigan showed that 78 percent of Stupak’s constituents said they opposed taxpayer funding of abortion. Stupak understands now what the polling revealed: a vote for that bill was a vote against the will of his constituents. Yet he chose to do it and now he is suffering the consequences.

Earlier this week the Susan B. Anthony List launched a grassroots campaign of radio and automated phone calls in the districts of “pro-life” Democrats, including Rep. Stupak, who voted ‘”Yes” on the health care bill to inform their constituents that their representatives’ vote for the bill was a vote for taxpayer funding of abortion.

He just thought he could square the circle, that is, establish his "prolife" bona fides and still get his precious seizure of the healthcare system

Early on maybe he thought public opinion would turn a bit and provide cover , but how could he have the last couple weeks or so ?.

Could be he felt he had to go through the motions given the facade he helped to create the first time through the House. Maybe he felt he would be seen as callow if he didnt kick up some dirt the second time through too . He also probably thought if Coakely had won he might be able to vote no after conference .

I guess he was just caught in his own petard. How thoroughly humiliating for him, though. Clumsy knucklehead.

What does Stupak suffer? Is he not permitted to move far away and start anew with a fat pension and retirement that atarts immediately? Has he traded his membership in Congress for perks not yet revealed?

Ah, but there is one thing such craven people cannot stand -- RIDICULE! We are too polite and deferential to people who are unworthy of either. Traitors like Stupak should be met with ridicule and scorn in every public place, and should not be welcomed in polite society. His face should be his shame, and his life a living hell.

I’m not sure that Stupak actually would expect to lose. He may have other reasons for bailing out, possibly financial. Perople in MI probably don’t even know what he did, considering the news blackout in such liberal states.

No, the ridicule is on the poeple of MI for ever discovering him. Those folks need more help than we can give them, I’m afraid. Isn’t the worst unemployment rate there, or is it CA?

Let’s wait and see what cushy job Stupak lands. Surely, Obama and Emanuel promised him something, knowing full well that his political career would be over.

Don’t you think he’ll get an adminstrative appointment somewhere?

Could a president sign an EO dissolving the Constitution?

Legally? No. The Constitution is any president's legal authority to even be president. To write such an order is tantamount to declaring that his legal authority is now "might makes right".

Will the current pResident try such an ill-advised maneuver? Possibly, as he isn't at all well-schooled in American governance. Would he be successful if he were to attempt it? Not without one heck of a fight...
