Schmidt said he doesn't want 'to be treated as a stranger' when reading online.

Well, -I- certainly do.

I know a lot of FReepers are cheering the death of newspapers, etc (Dinosaur Media Deathwatch, et al), but I think it's a bad thing.

Back in the day, most all major media outlets had bureaus in many countries. News events would be confirmed by multiple sources before they ever ran with a story.

Those days are gone. Now we have to rely on single sources such as the AP and blogs. Too easy for the PTB to manipulate.

>"his machines will help decide what news you receive! "

Ya know, I'll bet this is already going on. Google has been notorious in the past for aledgedly logging key punches and such. Their web browser was noted for sending usage stats back to the G spot.

If anybody is gonna be the first to dictate what you look at, it's gonna be Google, with Al gore grinning from ear to ear.

Google: “Today we have all sorts of positive news stories about Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid, for *you* to read.”

You: “No thanks. I want to get news from The Free Republic, The Drudge Report, Orbusmax, Rush Limbaugh, FOX News, several milblogs, maybe some Fark to remind me of how many idiots are out there, and Tampa Bay Online, to see what the leftist idiots at AP have to say.”

Google: “No. You don’t understand. You HAVE to be challenged. This is why we are ONLY going to show you all sorts of positive news stories about Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid, for *you* to read. And balance them with stories from The Daily KOS.”

The way they can do this is by checking for ‘fixed IP’ (mostly on cable companies ISP networks) as opposed to ‘dynamic IP’ or using ‘tracking cookies’, as opposed to registration / password stored cookies.

Tracking cookies are very easy to defeat, just delete them selectively and regularly by using your browser or any of the free cookie and cache cleaners available on the Internet.
