Why work when I can get £42,000 in benefits a year AND drive a Mercedes?
The Daily Mail (U.K.) ^ | April 13, 2010 | Paul Sims

Posted on 04/13/2010 2:08:53 AM PDT by Stoat

(edit)

At their semi on the Isle of Anglesey, the family have a 42in flatscreen television in the living room with Sky TV at £50 a month, a Wii games console, three Nintendo DS machines and a computer - not to mention four mobile phones.

With their income of more than £42,000 a year, they run an 11-seater minibus and the seven-seat automatic Mercedes.

But according to the Daveys they have nothing to be thankful for.

'It doesn't bother me that taxpayers are paying for me to have a large family,' added Mrs Davey.

'We couldn't afford to care for our children without benefits, but as long as they have everything they need, I don't think I'm selfish.

'Most of the parents at our kids' school are on benefits.'

She added: 'I don't feel bad about being subsidised by people who are working. I'm just working with the system that's there.

'If the government wants to give me money, I'm happy to take it. We get what we're entitled to. I don't put in anything because I don't pay taxes, but if I could work I would.'

http://www.libraryindex.com/pages/910/Comparing-New-TANF-with-Old-AFDC-ELIGIBILITY-BENEFIT-PAYMENTS.html

In 1996, the last year AFDC existed, the maximum AFDC grant for a Florida single parent with three kids was $303.00.

Perhaps it's time to admit your sister isn't an expert on welfare benefits because she works in a post office. 60k is a completely ludicrous number.

They get so much for each kid etc. and they sometimes open the checks and complain to her about it not being enough. As if she has anything to do with it. They also raise hell if it is not in on time. These are sick people who grow up in the system and have no plans on ever getting off. They just want more. Work is out of the question. The only work they do is vote Democrat.

With the Post Office gone, residents don’t know where to go to pick up their paychecks
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

So some bureaucrat came up with the brilliant idea of ‘direct deposit’ and debit cards so now they don’t even have to leave the house to ‘earn’ OUR money.

Wasn’t it R Reagan, while Gov of California, who stopped mailing checks and made everyone go to an office to pick up their portion of the dole?
Supposedly the state saved money as some were to sorry to travel downtown to pick up their check....

You are ridiculous. A single welfare queen with 10 kids gets over 30k in food stamps and afdc alone. Get a brain.

But you are forgetting that the government is purposely trying to GROW the population.

Think of it this way.

These people are being paid to breed.

On the other hand, for Western civilization to continue it needs people who actually reproduce. If the Davey’s family is being paid for by a lot of single people who will never have kids, maybe it all work out.

These are not the children on whom Western Civ is based.

“When my aunt lost her job she looked into financial assistance to help with her kids. The social worker told her to get a divorce so she could get additional money for herself. No joke.”

Back in 1984 I was out of work in Michigan and I found work in Florida. My wife and I were on “Government Assistance” for about 18 Months. Once I found work in Florida I went back to Michigan and to get my wife and kids. As part of the process about a week before I was to get there my wife told the Case Worker that I had found work and that we were leaving the “system”. The case worker tried her damndest to convince my wife that I had abandoned her and that they would go after me for child support and that she would be “taken care of” by the state and would not have to worry about food or housing, etc.

Once she told me that I left immediately to get her and the kids and we “left in the middle of the night”. I’m not sure that anything would have happened if we had gone through on our original schedule. But the state was treating us like children and wanted to control everything in our lives. And quite frankly I didn’t want to risk “blowing up” if the case worker just happened to show up while I was packing the U-Haul.

Not only direct welfare (TANF) but Section 8, often WIC, ...there’s more, I just don’t know it all.
They don’t just live, they live large. They and children have better stuff than we ever dreamed of having, because we don’t get it handed to us.
I’m one of the providers, they are the takers.

Decadence in action. If you pay people to do nothing, then naturally that is what they will do and this is the attitude they will exhibit. The only problem is that not everyone can receive like this. In the end someone has to pay. Oh that would be me, wouldn’t it?

This is how it starts. It is really, really hard to be starting out on a low paid job. The system is meant to prevent people from being in want, but what some bureaucrat who doesnt live in the real world doesnt understand is that there are many, many low-paid workers who are already at or below the levels they think are “livable”.

I read quite a few of the comments and e-mailed by Norwich-raised wife the story. I take it that the virtually all critical comments are typical of the average U.K. citizen. But will Cameron change things, or will he be just a slightly less noisome pol than Brown?

It’s telling that the UK publications always present a large, real family (with father) of northern European descent with these welfare stories. As in the propaganda here, in the USA, they don’t show single welfare queens and third-worlders. Hopefully, the default will come soon, and quite a few million more will learn needed lessons.

While I agree with what you say on all counts, I actually believe that in a matter such as this, showing a family that has the outward appearance of a 'typical English family' of 100 years ago may actually better serve to promote needed changes to an utterly corrupt welfare/dole system.

If the family had any sort of 'ethnic' appearance, there would be instant cries of RACISM! from 'the usual suspects' which would drown out and completely overshadow the message that truly needs to be conveyed by this article.

Similarly, any sort of 'nontraditional' family might evoke sympathy from many, further diluting the essential part of the story.  "They're just poor, downtrodden folk who come from a horrible place, surely we can help them!" sidetracks the message that desperately needs to be communicated here.

Without the political distractions of race or whatever, I believe that the story is actually more powerful in that it evokes a feeling of "this is awful! We've GOT to change the system!"...which is really the message best suited for making positive improvements.

When my aunt lost her job she looked into financial assistance to help with her kids. The social worker told her to get a divorce so she could get additional money for herself. No joke.

Of course her Catholic upbringing would never allow her to do that, but just imagine the millions of vulnerable families that are destroyed by thus culture of government "support".

Stories such as those of your Aunt need to be spread far and wide.  The welfare culture destroys families, and I'm not sure that this is widely known.

Here’s an example of what Socialism does to people. These people have been turned into ungrateful, lazy parasites. It’s immoral, at the deepest level.

Dennis Prager’s slogan is true: “The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen”.

That's one of the reasons why the Left is so violently antagonistic toward any hint of traditional morality.....morals interfere with their plans to build a Socialist Utopia, which requires a foundation of destroyed families, racial and ethnic discord, sloth, fear and misery.  Morals are part of the glue that hold any coherent and functional society together, so morals must be eliminated in order for Socialism to rise.

Get a brain.

You made a stupid claim in a public forum, and your source for the claim was apparently your sister, "who works in a post office."

I've cited Florida statute to back myself up, while you've just said the acronym of a federal program which hasn't existed in over ten years. And you're telling me to get a brain. That is amazing.
