Sigourney Weaver attacks Oscar voters (Avatar didn't win Oscar because "Jim didn't have breasts")

Sigourney Weaver has launched a blistering attack on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, saying James Cameron didn't win the Oscar for Best Director because he "didn't have breasts."
Outspoken "Avatar" star Weaver said she believed Cameron -- who lost out to his ex-wife, "The Hurt Locker" director Kathryn Bigelow -- didn't win because the academy wanted to make history by naming its first ever female Best Director.
"Jim didn't have breasts, and I think that was the reason," Weaver told Brazilian news site Folha Online over the weekend. "He should have taken home that Oscar
In a stunning rebuke hinting at frustration in the "Avatar" camp -- who applauded gracefully when "The Hurt Locker" also took the Best Picture Oscar -- Weaver added, "In the past, 'Avatar' would have won because they [Oscar voters] loved to hand out awards to big productions, like 'Ben-Hur.' Today it's fashionable to give the Oscar to a small movie that nobody saw."

Only thing is, Ben Hur is one of the greatest movies ever made, with one of the best performances by one of the best actors this country has ever seen. It did deserve the Oscar, and has stood the test of time.
Not only did Charlton Heston win the Best Actor Award, the movie took home the Best Actor in a Supporting Role as well as a total of 11 Oscars, including the Best Director and Best Movie awards. Can't compare some CGI movie with some tree hugging creatures, a thin story line, and very little real acting to Ben Hur.

I suspect Avatar did not win because Jim is a little “jerky” and the movie was just popping special effects eye candy for the youths. Hollywood probably liked the message and agenda of the movie though. Yes Ben Hur had a great story and well as being a big production.

Speaking of Oscar winners, I watched “Marty” the other night on AMC. A movie that would no doubt never get made these days. CGI and 3-D does not equal good film-making.

Sigourney Weaver smacked in the face by PC! Did she ask WHY Al Gore won, WHY B.O. won Nobels? WHY Michael Moore won awards? Why Denzel beat Crowe?

Exactly right!
Ben Hur was also a story that was captivating from beginning to the end.
Avatar... a rehash theme played over and over again.

Maybe Avatar didn't win because it lacked originality.

Another freeper who took his daughter to see it, asked her afterwards what she thought, and she noted (with an exceptional display of insight) that "it was Pocahontas with blue people".

Movies used to go to the one with the biggest box office take, now it is liberal politics. I think this movie won for three reasons. The female director, the portrayal of a solder as a bit mad who is in love with war, and they were told they had to vote for it if they wanted additional work in Hollywood by industry elites.

Much better to blame it all on lack of breasts. Chortle!

From the link:
Weaver made her comments as she and Cameron promoted "Avatar" in Brazil and protested against the proposed Belo Monte dam in the Amazon -- the world's third-largest hydroelectric project -- which they claim will destroy the jungle and displace indigenous tribes. Cameron also wrote a letter to Brazilian President Lula da Silva, who's insisting the project will go forward and has refused to meet with him.
God forbid some Brazilians get electricity.

I’ll also go with the fact that Hurt Locker was a really good movie with well-developed characters. Very contra-factual, but still it left me intrigued and thinking.
The remarkable thing about Avatar is that everyone who likes it seems to spend an inordinate amount of time trying to tell you that it’s not like some other movie.

Best picture of the year is the one that makes the most money!
The moviegoers cast their vote for best picture with their dollars.
Screw the academy.

No amount of CGI, special effects and dazzle can ever make up for the lack of a good script and good acting. A film with good writing and acting will always trump dazzle without substance.

Sigourney is also somewhat lacking when it comes to breasts. She is not bad looking though IMHO but haven’t seen her recently. I am probably still imaging her from the Alien era.

Saw that one too this past weekend on TCM. Good character driven storyline, enjoyed it very much. You are right, no movies like that now...which is why I watch the old movies more than anything else.

Could have knocked me over with a feather when Frank Sutton showed up. Then it hit me, he and Borgnine went on to star in two of the biggest “miltiary comedies” of the 60’s (”McHale’s Navy” and “Gomer Pyle”).
