Why Do So Many Americans Pay No Income Taxes?
Keith Hennessey Blog ^ | 4/15/10 | Keith Hennessey

Today many are discussing how many Americans do not owe income taxes. The traditional debate splits along partisan lines. Many Republicans and conservatives argue it is both unfair and politically dangerous to have (almost half / more than one-third, depending on who’s measuring) of Americans not owing any income taxes. Many Democrats argue the rich should pay more, and that it’s good that low and even moderate-income people owe no income taxes.

I wonder how many Republican Members of Congress remember that they are, in large part, responsible for this outcome?

Good analysis of how the Earned Income Tax Credit and expansion of the child tax credit has increased the number of people who don't pay US income tax.

I don’t mind people not paying any taxes. It’s when they start getting taxes back that they didn’t pay in is the problem.............

Well then, it’s a problem now. Earned Income credits do that fro a large number of citizens.

No. Flat tax period. 11 or 15% period. One paragraph and the IRS goes away. Processing could be handled by Treasury.

It’s a matter of burden. It’s a cruel society that takes from those that have nothing to take, and no one in their right mind wants to implement such a system. We pay a lot of taxes in this house, and while we don’t like it, I can honestly say that every dollar in taxes cuts in only to discretionary income. If our income was $20k rather than $120k, every tax dollar would literally be food off the table.

The standard Lib talking point is that they pay SSI and Medicare tax, as though that is fare or sufficient.

They follow that up with the complaint that SSI contributions stop at around the $108K income level.

Those that pay no income tax are the very people who will be dependent on SSI.
Those who pay income tax will likely receive HALF of their SSI benefit.
Furthermore, the reason SSI contributions stop at a certain income level is because the future benefit has a cap too.
It isn’t as though you get more if you pay more.

I think we are kidding ourselves if we think the government would hold the tax at 11%. It wouldn’t keep the people broke enough. The government would, most likely, tax at the above 20% level.

That's why an equal percentage is the most fair to everyone. Those with little only have to pay a little.

Especially in today's America, real poverty is extremely rare. Those beneath the artificial "poverty line" mostly live a lifestyle far above the world's average. Many "poor" people have no problem coming up with money for beer and cigarettes.

Additionally, voluntary charity can and does help millions in need. Involuntary charity, which is how progressive taxation and government welfare is sold, is just a form of theft.

I think the fair thing is that everyone who benefits should pay, something. That "something" would be much less for everyone if the government was reduced to its appropriate, small size.

Cut the government down to the basics and everyone could pay a flat 10-15% and we'd all benefit.

Being a bit more of an angry gent, I have deemed my taxes paid this year.

Before it was a matter of paying into the greatest country in the world. Even if those prices were to go up - I would pay.

Then they destroyed the constitution. They passed law against the wishes of their constituents. I put my money under the mattress.

Maybe I’ll pay it when this is all over. I want to see them out first, and I want to see my taxation come with representation.

I haven’t received a refund on anything since I was 16. When I learned that my refund was basically a loan I gave to them at no interest. Now I pay what’s due, when it’s due. (well, not NOW now.. but nowish)

If one citizen must pay a tax on their income then all should have to pay an equal percent.

I am sure that the Dims would think that this is a good thing; this is their voting base.

I would be fine with the poor not paying taxes if they were not permitted to vote.

Back in the 18 th century you had to own property to be able to vote for a very simple reason; property owners were the only ones who paid taxes.

Voters should be required to have “skin in the game”.

If you are going to vote someone a benefit from the public coffers you should be someone putting in to those coffers from your own pocket.
