I caught up with Chris Mathews and asked him what he thought about all the Tea Party gatherings on April 15th. Chris was leaving the main hall after hearing Jerry Brown Speak and on his way to the luncheon to hear Huffington's speech. Get a good look at Mathews wife when he answers the Tea Party question. She knew he was full of BS. He was just giving an answer to avoid any disagreement. He was attempting to be diplomatic, but she didn’t see that right away and gave him a sort of “You don’t really feel that way!” type of look.

Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s regularly an underhanded schmuck on his show and that he doesn’t play fair—but he was smartly genial in dealing with you. (And you’re right, his wife was shocked to hear him say something positive about the tea partiers!)

What his wife's reaction--and his smile at her--says to me is he was BSing you. He carefully said "interest". He wasn't praising the Tea Party, he was carefully phrasing his words to be "objective" when caught by someone who didn't agree with him like on his show. (Or whom he could bully on home turf on his show.)
I bet if asked Matthews would say something like 'Well the KKK had interst too.'
