Russia could build a satellite for the detection and tracking of submarines from space, a defense industry spokesman said on Thursday. Vladimir Boldyrev, of the Kosmonit science and technology center, said the group had developed a space satellite module that could carry out remote sensing of the sea and "detect submerged submarines."
"Hopefully, it will be tested in space as early as 2011," he said, adding that work on the module started over a decade ago.
He offered no indication as to when the new satellite would enter service with the Russian Armed Forces.
Boldyrev added that the dual-use module would be used for both defense and civilian purposes, in particular, providing meteorological data.

They said years ago to President Reagan that they could detect our nuclear submarines from space. If detected, they could be targeted.
...and in 50 years, when THESE files are opened, we’ll find US ‘defense companies’ had practically taken them through the entire technology development needed for this capability.
NEVER trust private companies to look out for America’s interests...we’ve been sold out COUNTLESS TIMES and they will ALWAYS sell us out.

Don’t know exactly what technology the Ruskies will use, but back in the ‘90s I read a story about an Australian Scientist who figured out a way to see through the oceans at any depth using special light filters or some such. The implications for ASW were obvious....Never heard about that scientist or his invention since.

Apparently, US non-military scientific exploration birds discovered this by accident in the late 80’s.
I suggest that we respond to this the same way they’ve responded to our missile defense shield plans. IE treaty dealbreaker.

Kaman Aerospace came up with a system called Magic Lantern in the early 90’s, using lasers for mine detection. Tracking a maneuvering submarine at depth from space would be quite an accomplishment.

This is old news. The US has had this capability for almost a decade.
The satellites in the Naval Ocean Surveillance System (NOSS), which are also referred to as Whitecloud, were placed in orbits of 1600 km altitude with an inclination of 63° and a separation of 100°. It is believed the satellites carried side and forward looking radar, multi-spectral scanners and infra-red detectors and are said to have had the capability to detect warm water in the wake of a submerged nuclear submarine. To date, three separate generations have been identified, but the NOSS program remains highly classified.

No, look up Bernard Schwartz at Hughes, regarding the sale of staging technology to the Chinese that allowed them to immediately roll out their first generation of ICBMs. Why did he do it...because the Chinese were blowing up his satellites before they got to orbit - he sent over a team of engineers to ‘fix their problems’ - and a big Clinton contributor...to HELL WITH THE UNITED STATES.

No, it’s not DU, it’s are own corporate leaders selling out their kids and grandkids, so they can have that expensive painting.
Ask yourself this question: Why do we require security clearances for defense companies? Answer: THEY CANNOT BE TRUSTED unless they face jail time.
