U.S.’s Toughest Immigration Law Is Signed in Arizona
New York Times ^ | April 23, 2010 | RANDAL C. ARCHIBOLD

Posted on 04/23/2010 6:50:59 PM PDT by lbryce

Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona signed the nation’s toughest bill on illegal immigration into law on Friday. Its aim is to identify, prosecute and deport illegal immigrants.

The move unleashed immediate protests and reignited the divisive battle over immigration reform nationally.

Even before she signed the bill at an afternoon news conference here, President Obama strongly criticized it.

Speaking at a naturalization ceremony for 24 active-duty service members in the Rose Garden, he called for a federal overhaul of immigration laws, which Congressional leaders signaled they were preparing to take up soon, to avoid “irresponsibility by others.”

The Arizona law, he added, threatened “to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and our communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe.”

The law, which opponents and critics alike said was the broadest and strictest immigration measure in generations, would make the failure to carry immigration documents a crime and give the police broad power to detain anyone suspected of being in the country illegally. Opponents have called it an open invitation for harassment and discrimination against Hispanics regardless of their citizenship status.

The political debate leading up to Ms. Brewer’s decision, and Mr. Obama’s criticism of the law — presidents very rarely weigh in on state legislation — underscored the power of the immigration debate in states along the Mexican border. It presaged the polarizing arguments that await the president and Congress as they take up the issue nationally.

Mexico’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it was worried about the rights of its citizens and relations with Arizona. Cardinal Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles said the authorities’ ability to demand documents was like “Nazism.”

Exactly what my 9 y/o said tonight when I told her! “When will the governor in Texas sign a law like that so PEOPLE WILL STOP BREAKING THE LAW AND GETTING REWARDED FOR IT?!?!”

Out of the mouths of babes...

[BamBam] called for a federal overhaul of immigration laws, which Congressional leaders signaled they were preparing to take up soon, to avoid “irresponsibility by others.”

In other words, BamBam says "bring me another 50 million Mexican voters" and the p---ks in Congress slobber "ooo-kay!"

"Irresponsibility by others." What a bunch of assclowns! Our founders are rolling in their graves at what we have done to this extraordinary nation.

Thank you Gov. Brewer. Great News! But, I'm still hoping Arpaio runs for Governor - the final nail in the coffin for illegal aliens in the state of Arizona. 49 other states to go!

If the states such as Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, and Texas immediately passed such legislation, it would throw Obama and his regime in a tailspin so quickly that they would be frantically trying to stop the hemorrhaging of votes that they are counting on by getting illegals legalized to vote. Then if other states would follow suit, it could actually sidetrack the regime from further inflicting their socialist/communist policies on us.

If only the conservative states would organize the people of this country could actually take the country back from these communist!

I predict California and New Mexico will experience a sudden rise in their illegal-immigrant populations (and also crime rates).

No wonder Bill Richardson is so choked, this puts him in a tight box.

Joe Legal makes too much money and is not eligible for food stamps or welfare. Joe Legal pays $500.00 per month for food, or $6,000.00 per year. Joe Legal now has $18,031.00.

Joe Legal pays rent of $1,200.00 per month, or $14,400.00 per year. Joe Legal now has $9,631.00.

Not sure about your math here, but I get the point.

Jose Illegal has nights and weekends off to enjoy with his family.

In these parts, Jose Illegal doesn't do that....he's busy doing his duty - spewing anchor baby seed in every which direction his wee-wee can hit.

“Sort of makes me want to move to Arizona. Except it’s so damn hot.”

This is true of the lowlands. Large parts of the state are high and cool - and further from the border.

For a thread whose subject is a news article with a high degree of importance, the number of postings is disappointing.

The arrogance of these people! Coming here, disrupting our orderly political processes with their street rantings, and demanding the privileges (but not the responsibilities) of U.S. citizenship for those who came here illegally and disrespected our laws. As though it was their right.

Hey guess what? If I was an Hispanic here legally, I would welcome being questioned by mistake. After producing my bonafides, I would wish the law enforcement agents much luck in apprehending the illegals among us. So what the hell is wrong with these people? What are they objecting to?

They should have all been thrown in jail for accosting the police with water bottles. Let them try that in their home country and see what it gets them!
